Role Summary
This is an extraordinary opportunity to join a rapidly growing space startup company and play a key role in the development of NewOrbit’s cutting-edge electric propulsion technology.
We are seeking for an expert in FPGAs to design and build digital electronic modules for sensing, communicating and controlling various subsystems of the air-breathing propulsion system under development.
This is more than a job – it's a chance to write your name in one of the most important spacecraft missions in space technology, which will unlock currently inaccessible ultra-low orbits for satellites and become the world's first in-situ resource utilization in the history of spaceflight.
About NewOrbit
NewOrbit is developing the first air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) satellite, which will operate at ultra-low Earth orbit (ULEO). ULEO is a range of altitudes under 250 km, which is three times closer to Earth than the current lowest operational altitude of traditional satellites. Operating at ULEO comes with game-changing benefits to most satellite applications.
ULEO has not yet been exploited since it requires using a propulsion system to counteract drag from air particles present at these altitudes, and practically, for years-long missions, this can only be achieved using these air particles already present in space as the propellent for the propulsion system. NewOrbit has developed an air-breathing electric propulsion system that is capable of counteracting ULEO drag, and is scheduled to perform the first proof-of-concept mission next year.
Your Role
We are seeking for enthusiastic, creative and hard-working world-class experts in the field of electronics to work alongside our power and propulsion scientists and engineers on developing digital electronic systems for real-time monitoring, control and communication for our flagship ULEO satellite and our pioneering mission to ultra-low Earth orbit. Applicants should be capable of delivering an entire digital electronic system from scratch and take its total ownership, covering design testing, debugging and optimisation.
Who we are looking for
1. Excellent understanding of the fundamentals (theory and practice) of digital electronics.
2. An MEng, MSc, or preferably a PhD in electronics or a relevant field.
3. Be a world-class FPGA expert.
4. The role has a significant hardware element, and therefore requires experience using lab equipment.
5. Be capable of designing and implementing an entire system from the ground-up.
6. Be a team-player: be go-to expert in FPGA design and development.
7. Experience in digital signal processing in an FPGA environment.
8. PCB design, schematic and layout (preferable using Altium) is a big plus.
9. Experience in the aerospace industry is preferable.
10. As a member of an early-stage startup, you will be expected to actively participate in the daily operation, growth, and R&D planning of the company.
