Brief Description: Maintaining the rail network is vital to ensuring safe and reliable journeys for passengers and freight. As a Track Technician based at our Barking depot, you’ll work outdoors as part of a close-knit team, carrying out essential maintenance to keep the railway running smoothly.
You don’t need rail experience to join us – many technicians come from a wide range of backgrounds. If you bring the right behaviours and transferable skills, we’ll provide full training to ensure you’re confident, competent, and working safely on the network.
Responsibilities
* Maintain, inspect and repair the track network (Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient.
* Work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often in demanding manual roles and across varied terrain.
* Transport equipment and kit as required while prioritising safety and adherence to rules.
* Collaborate with the team and support the team leader; deliver work safely and ensure team competencies meet safety standards.
* Be a role model for safe working behaviours and be confident to challenge potential safety risks so everyone gets home safe every day.
Qualifications and Skills
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
* Effective communication – strong communication skills and ability to give clear instructions.
* Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the relevant discipline.
* Safety – model safe behaviours, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solving – persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and keeping skills up to date with standards, procedures and instructions.
* Willingness to learn – continuous development of skills and competencies relevant to the discipline.
* Relevant qualification – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
Requirements and Expectations
* Shifts – changing shift patterns including days, nights and weekends.
* Outdoor working – comfortable working outside in all weathers.
* Pre-employment checks – drug and alcohol testing, relevant medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight examination.
* Driving – driving licence (category B) required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute – within a 60-minute commute of the location.
* On-call requirement possible if you opt for certain contracts.
