An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint Band 6 Acute Oncology Nurse to work within the new purpose build Acute Cancer Care SDEC. The acute oncology nurses work very closely with all staff involved in the care of cancer patients but, in particular, Oncologists, Haematologists, AMU, Emergency Department & the Cancer & Palliative Care MDT members. The Acute Oncology Team liaise closely with both tertiary & primary care partners. The role requires a motivated individual who is keen to improve the patient & carer experience throughout the cancer pathway especially for emergency admissions. This role requires NMC Registration. Interview Date: 25th March Main duties of the job The post holder will require highly developed communication, organisation & facilitation skills. The role includes comprehensive telephone triage using the UKONS assessment tool, giving advice and signposting. Assessment and care of patients who attend the Cancer SDEC, including bloods, cannulation, CVAD care, ECG's etc. Working for our organisation UHD are investing, developing and transforming Trust services in line with the New Hospital Programme. As part of this, some services may move site this year or next, either temporarily or permanently. Recruiting Managers will be happy to answer any service-specific questions at interview. If a role or service relocates as part of a planned move, excess mileage will not be reimbursed. Travel from home to the new work base will be classed as a normal commute. Detailed job description and main responsibilities The post holder will: -Work as part of the team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidenced-based nursing care which may include outreach into the community as required. Demonstrate effective time management and organisation skills to ensure patients are seen within the required time frame with the support of the Acute Oncology Nurses and the Clinical/Medical Oncologists who provide sessional support to the service. Support the Acute Oncology Team (AOT) to deliver the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) for relevant cancer patients in line with national guidance and the requirements of the Quality Assurance Process. Work in partnership with other key staff within the AOS including Oncologists, Haematologists, and Specialist Palliative Care Teams, all cancer MDTs, Emergency Departments and AMU’s. The team also need to link with primary and tertiary care colleagues and the wider hospital nursing and medical teams. Help to plan, deliver and evaluate specialist programmes of education and training to all grades of staff throughout the Trust, primary care settings and to patients as appropriate. Support the Acute Oncology team to develop and evaluate the provision of clinical audit programs and clinical guidelines that ensure the effectiveness of AOS using appropriate research.
