Assistant Editor / Editor role at Penguin Random House UK

We’re the UK’s largest publisher, with around 2,000 people and publishing over 1,500 books each year. We welcome all kinds of talent and work to stretch the definition of the word publisher. You’ll work with a breadth of talent to help make each of our books a success.

Are you an Assistant Editor or Editor looking for your next step? We have an amazing opportunity to join Transworld to directly support our new Non-Fiction Publisher and the wider team at an exciting time of growth for our three imprints – Torva, Doubleday and Bantam.

About Transworld

At Transworld, we publish the UK’s best and most-loved fiction and non-fiction. We look for great storytelling that defines the moment and inspires readers across the market. We are focused on growing non-fiction across lifestyle publishing and the three non-fiction imprints.

The role

This role provides editorial, publishing and administrative support. You will work with the Non-fiction Publisher and the Doubleday Non-fiction Publisher, assisting with acquisitions, and overseeing non-fiction team schedules. You will support the Publisher with the smooth running of the non-fiction lists. We are open to appointing someone at Assistant Editor level or Editor level.

You’ll be involved in all processes of book production, from acquisition to publication, helping to turn ideas or manuscripts into finished, bestselling products, championing our books internally and externally, and providing exceptional author and agent care at all stages.

* Assisting the Publisher in managing our best-selling authors and high-profile talent with day-to-day author care and communication.
* Overseeing internal book processes for specified titles, including scheduling, jacket/cover briefs, copy, proofs, legal reads, Advanced Title Information, and coordinating with authors, ghost-writers, production, designers and freelancers.
* Collaborating with marketing, publicity, sales and rights teams as a go-to contact for Non-fiction across the business.
* Managing evolving editorial schedules (and budgets where needed) with freelancers and internal teams.
* Contributing ideas to meetings and staying engaged with lifestyle/digital space, trends and audience insights.
* Supporting the Non-Fiction team with administrative tasks as needed.
* Assisting in reading proposals, writing vision documents, and conducting audience insights and sales comps.
* Delivery-focused with strong project management, prioritisation and time-management skills.

What you’ll bring

* Passion for a career in non-fiction editorial.
* Experience taking mono and colour non-fiction books through the publishing cycle, with proven editorial and illustrated publishing skills.
* Awareness of and engagement with the non-fiction market—retailers, media, audiences, communities and digital.
* Experience managing multiple projects and communicating with authors, stakeholders and internal teams.
* Excellent communication and author care.
* Proactive problem-solver with a positive, calm approach in a fast-paced environment.
* Collaborative team player who is highly organised and detail-oriented—managing diaries and schedules.
* Ability to spot opportunities for improvement and growth; enthusiastic and curious.
* Ability to partner with internal teams across the business to champion books.

Application instructions

Please apply with a CV and covering letter, telling us in no more than 500 words about a non-fiction book that changed your mind, and a non-fiction book which you believe Transworld could – or should – have published, and why. Please submit your application by the end of the day on Friday 12 September.

Salary: £30,000 - £40,000 dependent on skills and experience, plus bonus and benefits.
