Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a nationally respected multidisciplinary building services consultancy in Birmingham. This is an exciting opportunity to lead mechanical design on high-profile projects across healthcare, education, commercial, and infrastructure sectors.
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of complex mechanical systems, deliver innovative, sustainable solutions, and mentor junior engineers while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead mechanical design across projects, including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and domestic water systems
Prepare and review detailed calculations, specifications, reports, and design drawings
Manage project deliverables from concept design through construction and commissioning
Coordinate with electrical, sustainability, and other engineering disciplines for fully integrated MEP solutions
Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff, fostering growth and knowledge sharing
Engage directly with clients, architects, contractors, and stakeholders to provide expert advice and ensure design quality
Promote sustainable, low-carbon solutions in mechanical building services design
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of UK building regulations, CIBSE standards, and emerging technologies
Contribute to business development activities and support client relationship growth
Candidate Profile
Degree-qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (BEng, MEng, or equivalent)
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working toward chartership (IMechE/CIBSE)
Minimum 6+ years’ experience in mechanical building services design within a consultancy environment
Strong knowledge of UK regulations, CIBSE guides, and sustainability standards
Proven expertise in HVAC, chilled water, heating, ventilation, and controls design
Proficient in mechanical design software: Hevacomp, IES, AutoCAD, Revit, or similar
Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and lead technical discussions
