Pay: £90-£110 p/day (PAYE) Are you passionate about supporting young people who need a fresh start? We are recruiting an SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a highly supportive Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Stockton-on-Tees area. The provision works with secondary-aged pupils who present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, and barriers to learning. The team focuses on restorative practice, nurturing relationships, and helping pupils re-engage with education in a safe, structured environment.
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
Support pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis to help regulate behaviour and improve engagement.
Build strong, trusting relationships with students who may display challenging behaviour.
Work closely with teachers, pastoral leads, and behaviour mentors to create a positive, consistent learning environment.
Contribute to behaviour and emotional support plans.
Promote resilience, emotional wellbeing, and positive choices.
This role would suit someone who:
Has strong experience supporting young people with SEMH needs (youth work, sports coaching, mentoring, residential care, or school experience beneficial).
Is calm, patient, and resilient when faced with challenging situations.
Can de-escalate behaviour and maintain a positive, supportive approach.
Ideally holds Team Teach, MAPA, PRICE, or similar de-escalation/restraint training (preferred but not essential).
Holds a valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or is willing to apply for one).
