The department receives over half a million requests annually, providing a twenty‑four‑hour diagnostic and monitoring service. The laboratory is ISO 15189 and HCPC/IBMS accredited, MHRA approved and facilitates military training. Additionally, the laboratory situated at on the QEH site is the nominated Coagulation laboratory for the West Midlands Regional Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre and regional TTP referral centre.

The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a relevant Biomedical Science Master's degree, HSD or recognised equivalent. You must have UK laboratory experience as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, at band 6 level or above, with a specialist interest in Coagulation, having a sound theoretical and practical knowledge.

Main duties of the job

You will be jointly responsible for the day‑to‑day management of the coagulation section including but not limited to reagent and quality control monitoring, managing workloads and turnaround times, audits and document control. You will be required to become competent at performing the specialist assays that the laboratory repertoire encompasses including platelet aggregation, ELISA techniques and Bethesda assays in addition to automated testing. You will also be expected to participate in projects to develop the service.

You will be expected to work collaboratively with the service management team and other Senior Biomedical Scientists within the department. In addition to this you will also work closely with the Haematology medical staff of the Haemophilia Centre. You will be expected to train staff, perform appraisals and other HR/workforce duties and you should therefore have good communication and interpersonal skills. Currently the laboratory operates a 24/7 shift system and after appropriate training you will be expected to participate in the departmental shift system which attracts AfC enhanced payments.

For further details or informal enquiries, please contact Lorna Philpotts, Coagulation Operational Manager on 0121 3715966.
