It is a specialised branch of Civil Engineering involving the behaviour of earth materials and the application of soil and rock mechanics.
Most construction projects require Geotechnical Engineering to be undertaken at some point, which means that Geotechnical Engineers play a vital role on a variety of different projects and helps determine the physical, mechanical and chemical properties of soil and rock to design foundations, retaining structures and earthworks along with much more.
Some examples of these projects include highways, railways, tunnelling, bridge foundations and dealing with natural hazards (such as landslides, earthquakes, etc.)
