Road Safety Engineer

About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Strategic Road Safety Engineer to join our team in Queensferry on a full-time basis, reporting to the Road Safety Manager. This role offers a clear progression pathway into a more strategic position and would suit either:
* An experienced Senior Engineer looking to take ownership of strategic road safety activities.
* An Engineer ready to step up, with strong technical foundations and a desire to develop into a senior‑level role.
We will provide training, mentoring, and ongoing support to help you grow and succeed in the position. You’ll play a key role in improving safety across some of Scotland’s most important transport infrastructure, contributing to both strategic planning and hands‑on delivery of road safety improvements.
Roles and Responsibilities
* Ensuring compliance with and assisting in the continuous improvement of the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality systems and procedures that form part of BEAR’s Integrated Management Systems.
* Undertaking Accident Investigation and Prevention studies and providing sound economic assessment and appraisal of Road Safety Improvements.
* Acting as Principal Designer on behalf of the company as required, ensuring compliance with CDM 2015.
* Co‑ordinating liaison with client contacts and auditors.
* Assisting the Road Safety Manager with the preparation of the Annual Road Safety Review and the development of the Road Safety and Active Travel 1 and 3‑year programmes.
* Attending Project Liaison Meetings and other internal and external meetings as required.
* Overseeing the investigation, design, procurement, supervision and valuation of works and operations.
* Preparing preliminary and detailed cost estimates, design and construction briefs and liaising directly with supply‑chain partners of consultancy and contracting services.
* Co‑ordinating the production, issue and archiving of all drawings, documents and scheme files associated with the Road Safety and Active Travel Programme.
* Providing expertise in the implementation of the Road Safety Audit Process for all design functions within NMC SE.
* Providing expertise in the implementation of the safe systems approach to road safety for all design functions within NMC SE.
* Managing and controlling the workflow to the Operations teams.
* Ensuring compliance with all technical standards of design and construction.
* Ensuring adequate environmental screening and mitigation measures prior to work commencement in compliance with environmental law.
* Submitting Departures from Standard when applicable.
* Providing mentoring and support to all members of the Road Safety team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Degree in Civil Engineering (Essential).
* I Eng certification or willingness to obtain.
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Scottish Trunk Road Maintenance Contracts.
* Detailed knowledge and experience of DMRB and design processes.
* Knowledge and understanding of CDM Regulations 2015.
* Understanding of Road Safety Engineering and the Safe Systems Approach.
* Completion of RoSPA Road Safety Engineering 10‑Day Training (or willingness to complete).
* Valid UK Driving Licence (Essential).
