What is Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy is the assessment and rehabilitation of people who have physical symptoms affecting the soft tissues, bones and joints. These conditions can have a significant negative impact on a person’s ability to manage day‑to‑day activities and reduce their quality of life.

Do you have people skills, motivation and a desire to help people reach their maximum physical potential? Do you have a background in rehabilitation, sport or the caring professions, or are you passionate about learning and growing a career in health care? Are you organised and keen to detail?

If so, we can support and develop you to work as part of the Physiotherapy Team, working alongside Physiotherapists, managing a caseload of MSK patients and providing invaluable support to the smooth running of the department. Our support workers are essential to the quality and sustainability of the service.

Previous experience working with people with MSK conditions, or working in a healthcare, patient support or exercise environment is desirable. If you are motivated, possess excellent potential for leadership and communication skills, can relate to people and are a willing active team player, we would be interested to hear from you.

Our support worker team in MSK Physiotherapy also links with staff in Learning Disabilities and Children and Young People teams, and we plan to further develop the support worker role in the Service.

We would like you to help grow the support worker role as the service continues to grow and develop. Whilst the majority of the Service is based around Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline areas, the opportunity to travel around Fife and work in various settings is available and may be required.

We provide a learning environment with regular in‑service training, peer review, mentorship and varied experiential opportunities at all levels. We support your Continuing Professional Development (CPD), participation in service evaluations, clinical audits and practice development networks. You will also be supported by our team of experienced Advanced Practice Physiotherapists and a Consultant Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist.

Fife provides a unique location to live and work, situated between Edinburgh and Dundee with access to beautiful countryside and coastline locally. The Highlands and the majority of the national area are within an hour and a half drive from central Fife.

Legal and Equality Statements

NHS Fife is legally obliged to ensure all its employees are legally entitled to work in the United Kingdom. If you are not a United Kingdom or Irish National, you are required to confirm your right to work in your application. To work in the United Kingdom, a relevant permission may be required, granted by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. NHS Scotland Boards will check entitlement to work in the UK. Evidence can be provided through specific visas, EU settled and pre‑settled status. For more information refer to the GOV.UK website.

For specific roles, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licensed Sponsor and the post meets the minimum salary threshold or ‘going rate’. If the post would be eligible to be sponsored before submitting your application form, you must confirm your right to work in the UK.

Due to legislative changes from 1 April 2025, this post may require a different level of criminal records check than is currently the case. If the post is assessed as a regulated role, your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. Any change to what is currently required will be confirmed by the Hiring Manager or Recruitment Team. For details, visit Disclosure Scotland Changes.

We offer flexible working and family‑friendly policies and fully support disabled candidates, and candidates with long‑term conditions or who are neurodivergent by making reasonable adjustments to our recruitment policy and practices.

NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
