Data Engineer Industrial Placements 2026 role at Met Office. This is a 12-month Year in Industry placement commencing at the start of July 2026. Two placements are available to help us make a difference to our planet.
Hybrid working may be available (office once a week minimum). This is a full-time, non-contractual placement of 37 hours per week with flexible working patterns where possible.
Your world of expertise
Our Industrial Placement scheme offers ambitious undergraduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience working alongside diverse and highly skilled experts. You’ll work on projects that matter and will make a difference. You will be joining the Machine Learning Operations team, which brings together Software, DevOps, and Data Engineers, Product and Delivery experts, Cloud Solutions Architects and Mathematicians to build services the Met Office relies on to power forecasting. Our team is multidisciplinary and collaborates across Technology, Product and Science to support colleagues advancing from small-scale experimentation to large-scale data processing and service creation.
Responsibilities
 * As part of the Industrial Placement Data Engineer, learn on the job and develop skills while working under supervision in a multidisciplinary team to deliver stories.
 * Understand and be proficient in different data types used at the Met Office.
 * Understand the scripts/methods used to transform our data.
 * Share the importance of data engineering with others.
Essential criteria, skills and experience
 * Studying towards a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Data Engineering, or a related field which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
 * Demonstrable experience with programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or R.
 * Understanding of data flows, data structures, algorithms, data engineering principles, and business intelligence (BI) systems.
 * Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
 * Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
 * Interest in weather and climate science.
