Trustee - HR Specialism
Role Overview (Unremunerated Volunteer Position)
As a Trustee, you will ensure our charity fulfils its purpose for the public benefit and meet its key legal duties.
* You will help safeguard the good name and values of Dorothy House, ensuring effective governance, responsible management of resources and financial sustainability.
* Your input will be crucial in guiding the organisation's strategic direction, setting goals, evaluating performance, and providing strong governance oversight.
* As Chair of the People and Development Committee (PDC), you will lead and influence discussions on workforce planning, leadership development, organisational culture, and remuneration.
* You will also support and constructively challenge the Executive Team in building a strong and sustainable workforce for the future.
Key Responsibilities
As our HR Trustee and Chair of the PDC, you will:
* Provide strategic HR guidance to the Board on key workforce issues, ensuring alignment with our strategy and compliance with legislation.
* Advise on the long-term vision for workforce investment, helping to shape a resilient and well-supported workforce.
* Challenge and support the Director of People & Services in delivering the workforce strategy, drawing on national and sector workforce trends.
* Bring broad HR expertise to matters including employee engagement, workforce planning, safeguarding, and organisational development.
* Review and support initiatives that build leadership capability, aligned with our Leadership Framework and "The Deal".
* Advise on fair and effective remuneration approaches that support recruitment and retention.
* Lead the PDC in line with its terms of reference, ensuring inclusive, well-chaired meetings and effective reporting to the full Board.
* Act as a key point of contact between the PDC and the Board of Trustees.
* Act as the Trustee Freedom to Speak Up Guardian
The Ideal Candidate
We are seeking someone with:
* A relevant qualification and Fellow-level membership of CIPD (or equivalent).
* Significant experience as a senior HR professional, with a proven track record at both operational and strategic levels.
* Strong knowledge of employment legislation, including upcoming changes under the Employment Rights Bill.
* Expertise in HR, workforce planning, and organisational development, with a focus on modern and innovative practices.
* Excellent stakeholder management, networking, and influencing skills.
* Strong leadership and facilitation skills, with previous experience chairing committees or meetings desirable.
* A commitment to palliative care and the mission of Dorothy House.
* Integrity, strategic vision, and independent judgment.
* An understanding of trusteeship responsibilities and willingness to undertake training as required.
* The ability to work effectively as part of a team and contribute to collective decision-making.
* Be eligible to be a trustee and 'fit and proper person'.
Time Commitment
Attendance at quarterly Board meetings (3 hours) and participation in two annual Strategy Away Days at Winsley
Chairing the People and Development Committee (quarterly).
Membership of the Remuneration Committee (annually).
Engagement in additional ad-hoc meetings and wider Dorothy House activities as appropriate.
Preparatory work in advance of meetings, including reviewing Board papers.
Appointment Details
The term is 3 years, renewable up to a maximum of 9 years (3 x 3-year terms).
Training in the responsibilities of charity trustees will be provided.
