Software Test Engineer

Overview
We are supporting a leading engineering organisation specialising in advanced sensing, navigation and mission-critical systems used within maritime and defence environments. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a Software Test Engineer to support the build, verification and validation of software across a range of complex products.
This role offers the opportunity to work on high-integrity systems deployed in demanding real-world operational environments, collaborating closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
The Role
The Software Test Engineer will be responsible for building, testing and validating software applications that support the organisation’s products and services. You will contribute to ensuring software quality, reliability and performance across the full development lifecycle.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Building and testing software releases for Windows-based systems
2. Producing and maintaining software build documentation and test specifications
3. Writing and executing structured test plans and reporting results
4. Supporting integration and verification activities
5. Contributing to the continuous improvement of software testability and automation
6. Assisting in the development and maintenance of build processes and installers
7. Acting as a technical liaison internally and with external customers or collaborators on software-related matters
8. Supporting additional project activities as required
The role is primarily based in North London, with occasional travel within the UK and overseas, including opportunities to visit and sail with maritime platforms during trials and commissioning activities.
Essential Requirements
9. Technical or engineering background
10. Understanding of the Software Engineering Lifecycle, particularly integration and test phases
11. Practical experience testing Windows-based software applications
12. Experience writing test plans, specifications and reports
13. Good knowledge of PC environments and Microsoft Office tools
14. Experience or knowledge of scripting/programming languages to support build and test automation
15. Strong communication skills
16. Willingness to travel occasionally (UK and international)
Desirable Experience
17. Experience building software and creating software installers
18. Experience working within a technical or engineering organisation
19. Exposure to systems used within maritime, defence or other high-reliability industries
20. Familiarity with version control and build management tools
Qualifications
21. Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline with software content
(Lower qualification considered if supported by relevant experience.)
