We are operational /6, and you’ll be expected to cover various early and late shifts, with a minimum of hours per week.
Flexibility is absolutely essential, as the nature of the role involves a wide range of different working arrangements and additional hours. There will be days when your finishing time is unpredictable, and you may need to work beyond your scheduled hours to meet the demands of the job.
We operate on a rota basis, which is provided weeks in advance, allowing you to plan ahead. This system ensures that, despite the long and often unpredictable hours, you will have the flexibility to enjoy meaningful time off to do the things you love.
About the Role:
As a DBO at our base, you’ll work as part of a crew to provide safe and secure court transportation and custody services for adults, children, and young people. You’ll transport and escort them safely to courts, ensuring their physical and mental well-being. In court, you’ll be responsible for their welfare until return to custody or release. Duties include searching property and people, ensuring the emotional and physical well-being of young people, managing anxieties, preventing escape, self-harm, harm to others, and damage to property, providing food and drink, and completing paperwork and data entry.
Key Responsibilities:
10. Arrive at the vehicle depot, attend briefings, and receive route details and detainee information.
11. Conduct risk assessments, check the vehicle for necessary equipment, and use appropriate vehicles for transport.
12. Handle both adult and young detainees, using appropriate protocols.
13. Engage with young detainees during transport, providing reassurance and support, while maintaining professional distance with adult detainees.
14. Provide court staff with detainee information and behaviour details and supervise and support young detainees at court.
15. Return detainees to their establishments or hand them over to another crew, and complete vehicle checks and necessary paperwork.
16. Manage the emotional demands of supporting vulnerable young people and handle a wide range of situations and detainees.
What you need to do the job!
Our current DBOs come to us with diverse work and life experiences. What matters most is your commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. You'll receive comprehensive training during a 5 1/2-week course and ongoing support from experienced colleagues. Requirements:
17. Hold a current driver's licence (B/B1).
18. Be reasonably fit to handle the physical demands of the role.
19. Have strong written and verbal communication skills to manage and control various situations effectively.
20. A genuine interest in working with children and young people.
21. Capability to handle stressful and emotionally demanding situations with a calm and composed demeanour.
22. Ability to think on your feet and make quick, effective decisions in challenging situations.
23. Strong ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the safety and well-being of detainees.
24. Meticulous in following protocols, conducting searches, and completing paperwork accurately.
25. Skilled in de-escalating conflicts and managing challenging behaviour effectively.
26. High ethical standards and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
27. Sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds and needs of detainees, ensuring respectful and fair treatment.

Additional Information:
All roles are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 4, and all offers of employment are subject to Ministry of Justice Enhanced Level 2 checks with Enhanced DBS (Adult & Child Barring) and satisfactory employment references.
This role is not eligible for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship under current UK Home Office rules, as it does not meet the required salary or skill level criteria.
