Principal Engineer
* Location: Flexible with office presence required on Tuesdays
* Job Type: Full-time, Hybrid
* Length of role: Initial 3 months
We are seeking a Principal Engineer with expertise in Section 38 of the Highways Act, focusing on highways adoption involving both residential and commercial projects. This role is crucial for working with highways consultants to ensure that road designs meet our stringent standards for adoption, covering all aspects including drainage and utilities.
Day-to-day of the role:
* Conduct technical audits on design proposals and provide detailed feedback on necessary changes, which may require multiple iterations based on the quality of submissions.
* Engage in rigorous negotiation processes with consultants to discuss and rectify shortcomings in highways designs.
* Manage and oversee the delivery of a wide range of engineering projects related to highways and transportation, ensuring compliance with safety, legislative, and regulatory standards.
* Lead a team in the planning, feasibility, financial, and resource management of various projects, from minor works to large-scale multi-agency schemes.
* Attend progress meetings and occasionally meet with the public and local councillors to discuss project impacts and progress.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
* Proven experience in Section 38 highway projects, with a strong background in public and/or private sector planning.
* Degree or Master’s in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
* In-depth knowledge of civil engineering principles, safety & risk management, and relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
* Strong leadership skills with experience managing site-based workforces and complex project deliveries.
* Excellent negotiation, decision-making, and communication skills.
* Competence in using IT systems including Microsoft Office, GIS-based mapping systems, and AutoCAD.
* Ability to work independently and make informed engineering judgments.
