Base pay range

We have a fantastic and unique opportunity for a talented gardener to join us for an 18-month Gardener Scholarship at Bodnant. Under the guidance of Head Gardener Ned Lomax and his team at Bodnant, you’ll gain practical hands-on experience in the art and craft of horticulture. There’ll be a particular focus on the approach of the garden’s founders whilst also seeking to innovate and welcome fresh ideas.

The scholarship will give you a deeper understanding of topics including soil management, rose pruning, garden design, hedge care and plant health, with flexibility to focus on particular areas of interest. In addition to these specialist skills, this opportunity will also provide you with essential skills in management, leadership, project management and working with the media, topics not traditionally taught as part of typical horticulture courses.

This scholarship has been designed to help prepare high performing Gardeners to be ready to take on a Head Gardener position.

Attached is a candidate pack that provide much more detail on this fantastic opportunity and the selection process for the role.

What it's like to work here

Bodnant is a world-famous garden, home to National Collections and Champion Trees. You’ll be working in a garden with plants collected and brought to Britain from far afield, and the incredible vision of generations of the McLaren family and Puddle Head Gardeners.

You’ll gain insight and practical experience into how an historically significant garden is managed throughout the seasons, as well time to visit other gardens.
