Job Overview

Maternity Leave Cover (12 months) in our Community Midwifery Team

An exciting development opportunity has arisen for a Senior Midwife to progress to a Team Leader! This post will provide the clinical and managerial leadership with the Matron, taking responsibility for providing a clear focus for the profession and effective clinical leadership and accountability for the service. They will be responsible for ensuring that the team act in a manner that upholds the values of the Trust and that of the profession.

Development Plan

Progression from Band 6 to Band 7 in Community Team Leadership.


Objective

To develop and enhance management and leadership skills within the community team, progressing from a Senior Band 6 role towards a Band 7 leadership position with the support and mentorship of existing Band 7 Community Team Leaders.


Duration

12 months in total


Phases

1. Phase 1: First 6 months – Focus on skill development and assessment
2. Phase 2: Following 6 months – Transition to Band 7 role with continued support and responsibilities


Main duties of the job

* Participate in activity with the Specialist team to manage and develop the service in line with local and national requirements ensuring the delivery of performance targets;
* Line manage a team of staff working within designated clinical area
* Work closely with Matron to ensure the efficient and effective running of area of responsibility
* Have overall responsibility for ensuring their clinical area is safe
* Deputise for the Matron and form part of the Directorate senior team
* Contribute to the development of patient‑centred services
* Be responsible for successful attainment of Trust and National quality and safety objectives within area of responsibility
* Provide expert clinical advice and care within designated area of responsibility

Development Plan


Phase 1: Skill Development (Months 1-6)

* Work under the guidance and mentorship of Band 7 Community Team Leaders.
* Engage in management and leadership activities, including team coordination, service improvement initiatives, and operational planning.
* Attend relevant training sessions or workshops focused on leadership, communication, and team management.
* Document progress through regular reflective logs or supervision sessions.


Assessment

* At the end of 6 months, complete a formal assessment and interview to evaluate skills development and readiness for advancement.
* Review feedback with mentors and supervisors.


Phase 2: Transition to Band 7 Role (Months 7-12)

* Upon successful assessment, formally advance to Band 7 position.
* Take on increased leadership responsibilities within the community team, including decision‑making, staff support, and project leadership.
* Continue receiving mentorship and participate in ongoing professional development.
* Regularly review progress and adjust development goals as needed.
* Be a registered midwife, with a minimum of four years comprehensive midwifery experience which has included caring for women during the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, development of antenatal education programmes, and recent experience as the lead professional supporting women through physiological labour and birth.
* Evidence of teaching and assessing in practice in addition to evidence of post‑registration education.
* Have knowledge of up‑to‑date developments and contemporary issues in midwifery policy and practice.
* Have experience in managing a team, including recruitment and selection, appraisal and the management of sickness.
* Have experience in research activities, audit and risk management, in accordance with the clinical governance framework. Contribution may have been through the collection of audit data for Directorate audits, or through the implementation and evaluation of local audits to promote best practice and highlight any risk management issues within the maternity service.
* Have evidence of successful change management such as the implementation of new guidelines or services.


Person specification


Education/Training/Qualifications

* Registered Midwife with NMC Registration
* Evidence of post registered education in leadership
* Teaching and assessing qualification
* Completion of Newborn and infant physical examination (NIPE) qualification


Work Experience

* Practicing Midwife with a minimum three years experience in relevant setting
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work co‑operatively with the multi disciplinary team
* Evidence of successful change management


Desirable criteria

* Evidence of participation in audit and research


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

* Knowledge and understanding of research and evidence‑based practice and the application to practice.
* Knowledge and understanding of current developments in Midwifery
* Knowledge and experience of Public Health Issues including Safeguarding
* Evidence of change management skills including advanced clinical skills and knowledge
