About ARU
The Writtle School of Agriculture, Animal and Environmental Sciences was established in 2024 as part of the Faculty of Science & Engineering at ARU. It offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses designed to offer a research-informed, high-quality educational experience. The School is dedicated to advancing knowledge across its land based disciplines, drawing on extensive industry and sector links to evidence developments that put science into practice on its own estate and farm.
About The Role
We have an exciting opportunity to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated lecturer in Horticulture to lead developments in environmental horticulture and the use of plants in domestic, public and managed green landscapes. Work with organisations and industry actively promoting the value and benefits of ornamental horticulture in the UK is desirable. The successful candidate will join our interdisciplinary team delivering high quality, innovative teaching across our undergraduate and postgraduate curricula.
Building on our long history as Horticultural educators, we are seeking applicants eager to contribute to a forward-looking vision producing graduates who are ready to meet the many challenges facing the horticultural sector today.
A track record of maximising the value of green space through public engagement, research and /or collaboration is desirable. Environmental health and climate resilience are core to this role with a demonstrable knowledge of the discipline’s impact on economic and societal gain including human health and well-being. Experience of practical selection and use of plants and trees in urban settings would be advantageous. We place emphasis on developing students’ integrated thinking skills, and their ability to make valued contributions to the industries we serve, securing a pipeline of future horticultural talent.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD or Master’s in Horticulture or a closely related subject and experience of working within the Horticultural sector and /or environmental horticulture research is desirable. You will be joining a professional team of specialists based at our Writtle Campus. Our green campus offers a living learning environment providing students with real world practical experience crafted through scholarship-led teaching. We aim to transform lives through our horticultural education leading to successful, lifelong graduate careers for our students. The appointee will be expected to play a crucial role in designing and delivering innovative curricula, developing research with impactful collaborative external partnerships to underpin our civic ethos.
