Locality Designer | 10262 | Permanent Contract | 37 hours per week | £32,061 to £33,699 per annum (Scale G) | Aylsham
We are looking for a proactive and collaborative Locality Designer to join our Highway Engineering Team in North Norfolk. This role plays a key part in shaping safe, accessible, and sustainable local highway environments across our communities. You will work closely with Highway Engineers, contractors, councillors, and local stakeholders to design and deliver high‑quality improvements within your assigned locality area.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead on the design and development of small to medium‑scale highway and public‑realm improvement schemes within a defined locality.
* Produce high‑quality concept designs, feasibility studies, and detailed drawings using CAD and other design tools.
* Work collaboratively with internal teams including Highway Engineering, Road Safety, and Flood & Water Management.
* Engage with councillors, residents, community groups, and other stakeholders to understand local priorities and shape design solutions.
* Support project delivery by preparing technical documentation, cost estimates, and scheme reports.
* Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards and local authority policies.
* Contribute to the development of locality‑based programmes, identifying opportunities for improvements and supporting funding bids.
* Undertake site visits, surveys, and assessments to inform design decisions.
About You
You will bring creativity, technical competence, and a strong sense of place‑making to the role. You’ll be comfortable balancing engineering requirements with community needs and will enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Experience in highway, transport, or public‑realm design (preferred, but full training and support will be given).
* Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) (preferred, but full training and support will be given).
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with a range of stakeholders.
* Ability to manage multiple projects and work to deadlines.
* Problem‑solving mindset with attention to detail.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* A driving licence and own vehicle; a pool vehicle will be provided when needed.
Desirable
* Experience working within a local authority or public‑sector environment.
* Knowledge of active travel design principles.
* Experience with GIS mapping tools.
* Relevant qualification in civil engineering, transport planning, or a related field.
