An exciting job opportunity has arisen to cover a 16-week Secondment Acting up as the Ward Manager/Sister on the GI Unit - Northumberland Ward.

The GI unit has 52 beds for specialist Gastrointestinal surgical patients, providing pre- and post-operative care. We care for some of the most complex GI patients and receive tertiary referrals from around the country. We are one of the leading services within South East London.

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled leader to join our dedicated nursing team on the GI Unit. In this leadership role, you will oversee the smooth operation of the ward, ensuring high-quality patient care, efficient resource management, and the well-being of staff and patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Managerial

* Lead the ward/department team and build successful links between key professionals to support effective multidisciplinary team working.
* Manage the department nursing staff, ensuring high-quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting individual customs, religious beliefs, and doctrines.
* Be accountable for practice in line with the NMC code of conduct and continuously develop professional competence.
* Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless patient care within the trust.
* Act as a professional nurse leader and role model, applying high standards of clinical skills and developing others.
* Maximize clinical resources, implement best practices in patient flow, admission, and discharge.
* Monitor budget statements, identify trends, and manage spending to stay within budget.
* Ensure adequate resources and equipment are available.
* Develop effective communication channels within the team.
* Participate in research, audits, and quality initiatives.
* Identify and address unsafe environments for patients and staff.
* Lead and support the ward team through change processes.
* Deputise for the Matron as appropriate.
* Responsible for medication administration, including blood transfusions and blood products.
* Assess and recognize emergencies, interpret information, and lead appropriate actions.
* Advocate for patients, ensuring patient-centered care and standards compliance.

Staff Management, Education, and Training

* Motivate, support, and identify training needs for staff.
* Implement HR policies on staffing, sickness, capability, and disciplinary issues.
* Participate in recruitment, selection, and retention strategies.
* Monitor staff turnover and retention, promoting flexible working.
* Conduct appraisals and set objectives for junior staff.
* Ensure induction programs and clinical teaching are in place.
* Participate in staff education, training, and research.
* Maintain training records and ensure mandatory training compliance.
* Collaborate with educational institutions for student placements and training.
* Keep abreast of nursing practice developments and research.
* Ensure skill mix optimization and monitor use of bank and agency staff.

Clinical Governance, Audit, and Research

* Ensure standards of care meet trust and personal standards.
* Maintain infection prevention and control standards.
* Engage in research, evidence-based practice, and audits.
* Contribute to service redesign and planning projects.
* Manage risks, incidents, and complaints proactively.
* Ensure safe manual handling practices.
* Develop and adhere to policies, procedures, and guidelines.
* Undertake audits and report incidents and accidents.
* Participate in clinical governance frameworks.
* Investigate and resolve complaints and incidents promptly.

Service Development

* Lead the implementation of clinical and organizational models.
* Ensure service delivery aligns with business plans, financial planning, and standards.
* Monitor activity levels and identify opportunities for service improvement.
* Challenge, change, and expand roles with the education team and leadership.
* Gather patient and public feedback for service enhancement.
* Develop and evaluate departmental protocols for consistency and quality.

Person specification

Qualifications

* RGN level 1
* Education in GI
* Ongoing professional development
* BSc or working towards it
* MSc or working towards it
* Data analysis and trend identification skills
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office
* Effective presentation skills
* Budget management skills
* Audit and research experience
* Change management skills
