Offer description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated nurse with extensive stoma care experience to join and lead a committed and well-established team. You will be expected to independently review, assess and initiate treatment for patients with stomas. A keen interest in colorectal surgery is a must, as care will be provided for patients during the pre, peri and post-operative period, in both acute and community setting.

Excellent communication skills are essential as you will not only be working autonomously but also with the wider multi-disciplinary team. The role will be rewarding but may also have associated challenges as you will be expected to not only lead the service but also contribute to the development of it.

This position will not be supported for visa sponsorship. All applicants are expected to have valid right to work document to work in the UK when applying for this position.


Main duties of the job

To provide professional and clinical leadership in stoma care and act as a resource for education and clinical expertise in the hospital and community settings.

To co-ordinate the provision of care for patients who require stomas.

To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-professional healthcare team both internally and externally to achieve a coordinated service.

To be familiar with current research investigations and procedures employed in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal/urological disease and stoma formation.

To be competent in discussing treatment options, including surgical procedures, with patients and carers.

To act as an autonomous practitioner within the colorectal team

Act as the lead nurse for the stoma therapy and manage a team of stoma nurses.

To provide an individual service and psychological support to patients and carers, respecting their culture and diverse backgrounds, whilst being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy.

To work closely with appliance company to ensure the use of appropriate appliances for patient both in the hospital and community.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

To act as an independent, autonomous practitioner, using advanced clinical skills to treat and advise on clinical management of stoma therapy and advise on management of complex abdominal wounds related to fistulae.

Is wholly accountable for his/her practice and takes every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve his/her professional knowledge.

To ensure good communication with all members of the team for example through attending ward rounds and MDT meetings.

To develop and sustain a high quality service with trust wide multi-professional teams.

To meet/visit elective patients pre-operatively to provide information and education to patients and their families regarding their proposed operation, stoma formation and to site the stoma. This care should be provided for patients undergoing emergency stoma formation where possible.

To advise staff as required in developing and appropriate plan of care for each patient incorporating discharge planning.

To provide samples and advice on suitable appliances and accessories as required, ensuring impartiality at all times.

To provide post-operative information, counselling and support to ensure that the patient and their carers have a level of knowledge and skill commensurate with their needs.

To provide follow up care and support during outpatient and home visits as appropriate.

To offer a supportive service to patients with a stoma and their carers, disseminating specialist knowledge to enable individuals to try and adapt to their surgery liaising with other healthcare professionals when necessary.

Person Specification


Education and Training

* 1st Level Registered Nurse
* Teaching and mentorship course
* Qualified to degree level
* Advanced clinical knowledge in stoma care
* Specialist experience in management of complex abdominal wounds
* Research experience in specialist field


Knowledge and Skills

* Evidence of clinical development
* Susbstantial clinical experience at a senior level in stoma care
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to plan and deliver own workload
* Ability to work autonmously and in a team
* Ability to understand and undertake business planning
* Able to plan service developments


Experience

* Evidence of ongoing training and development
* Knowledge of managing teams
* Understanding of HR processes
* Proven substantial experience in stoma care
* Have an understanding of risk and clinical governance
* Counselling skills

£57,888 to £64,880 a yearper annum pro rata inclusive of allowances
