Our world-leading Time & Frequency department are seeking an experienced Scientist to develop some of the most innovative uses of ultra-precise measurements over optical fibre links.
We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working. We strive to offer a great work life balance - if you are looking for full time, part time or flexible options, we will try to make this work where business possible. This will be dependent on the kind of role you do and part of the business you work in.
This permanent, full-time position comes with a generous salary and benefits package.
You’ll enjoy collaborating with prominent Scientists and Engineers to conceive, design, build state-of-the-art ultra-stable setups to perform innovative tests on optical fibre systems and links.
You’ll enjoy sharing responsibility for the development of research on applications of ultra-stable interferometry for a range of scientific and societal applications; such as
1. Earthquake and tsunami detection using seafloor cables
2. Ocean signal monitoring such as currents and tides
3. Distant atomic optical clock comparison over fibre links, including over intercontinental distances
4. Advanced laser stabilisation techniques
NPL has pioneered sensing techniques for the detection of earthquakes and ocean currents using the existing undersea network of optical fibres and is looking at expanding the knowledge and applications of these techniques.
This role provides exciting opportunities to publish your work in high-impact academic journals and present it at prestigious international conferences, contributing to a rapidly growing field of research.
