The Audit and Investigation service provides independent assurance, advice, and investigative support across the Council. Our work helps protect public funds, strengthen governance, and ensure that services operate with integrity and transparency. The team delivers fraud prevention, detection, and investigation activity in line with the Council’s policies and statutory responsibilities.
About the job
This role will play a central part in delivering high quality investigations into alleged fraud, misconduct, or financial irregularities affecting the Council’s services. You will work closely with colleagues, service areas, and external partners to gather evidence, assess risks, and provide clear, objective findings.
The post involves managing a varied caseload, conducting interviews under caution, preparing reports, and sanction files, attending court as required. You will ensure that all work is carried out in accordance with legislation, Council policies, and recognised professional standards. The role contributes directly to the Council’s commitment to strong governance and effective stewardship of public resources.
What We Are Looking For From You
We are seeking an Accredited Counter Fraud Specialist, or equivalent, with proven experience of conducting criminal investigations. You will need strong digital, analytical, and investigative skills, together with the ability to gather and handle evidence to CPIA standards, conduct PACE compliant interviews, and prepare high quality case files capable of supporting criminal sanctions and overpayment recovery.
You should be confident managing your own caseload of investigations across areas such as Council Tax, Council Tax Reduction, Housing, and National Fraud Initiative match work, using data driven techniques to secure robust outcomes.
Clear written and verbal communication, sound professional judgement, and the ability to work independently and objectively are essential. Experience of working within local government or the wider public sector is desirable. A basic DBS check is required.
