Specialist Speech & Language Therapist

As part of our ServiceRedesign, new posts have been developed to support our high risk patients whorequire a fast response in order to prevent hospital admissions where possible.This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative and experienced therapist tojoin the countywide Worcestershire Adult Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Service,which covers Community Hospitals, Out-patient Clinics and Specialist Teams,with the aim of providing the optimum evidence-based service for the people ofWorcestershire.

Full time fixedterm 12 month Countywide post (part time or job share considered;minimum 0.4 WTE) will focus on Fast Response under the guidance of a HighlySpecialist Clinical Lead, as well as working alongside experienced communitySLT colleagues. Clinically, you will provide specialist assessment, diagnosisand case management for patients with a range of communication disorders anddysphagia related to a variety of diagnoses and may maintain a small caseload.

You will be integral tothe continued development of the Service into a high performing, well respectedprovider of timely, safe and effective Speech and Language Therapy for ourpatients, therefore we require an ambitious and creative clinician who isself-driven, and who also works well within a team.

Main duties of the job

Atypical day will involve managing a caseload of fast response referrals inliaison with the Clinical Lead, prioritising visits across the county, raising anypotential concerns regarding capacity and demand. You may also maintain a smallgeneral caseload based in the north of the county, working at a Specialistlevel, as well as having the opportunity to work clinically in inpatientsettings.

Youwill work independently in the assessment and management of patients withcommunication and swallowing disorders, completing clinical documentation onour electronic records system.

Youwill formulate individual therapy programmes targeting realistic patient-ledgoals, as well as offering support and education to carers/families.

Youwill liaise with other members of the team and MDT colleagues; support studentplacements; provide in service training for SLT colleagues and otherprofessions in areas related to SLT, and participate in audits as required bythe service and the Trust.

Youwill attend clinical and service meetings.

Youwill receive training and supervision, and will engage in self-directedlearning.

Job responsibilities

You will work in a clinic,hospital or domiciliary setting to provide assessment, diagnosis and full casemanagement of adult patients with communication and swallowing difficulties

Following yourpatient assessment, you will be responsible for providing appropriateintervention and evaluating outcomes

You will communicatecomplex condition-related information to patients, carers and relevantcolleagues, as well as demonstrating practical procedures where appropriate

You will demonstrateclinical knowledge and effectiveness by the use of evidence-based practice andoutcome measures

You will demonstratecommitment to personal development and acquisition of further skills andknowledge

You will adhere toNational and Local standards and guidelines relating to professional practice

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Attainment of degree or equivalent, giving eligibility to practice as a Speech & Language Therapist
* Evidence of recent CPD relevant to this post
* Attainment of formal dysphagia competencies allowing independent assessment, treatment and full case management with this client group
* Attainment of RCSLT NQP Competencies Framework allowing full membership of RCSLT
* Current HCPC Registration
* Current RCSLT Membership
* I understand that I will be asked to provide original certificates to verify my qualifications at point of offer.


Knowledge

* Current knowledge of assessment, treatment and case management for adult clients with complex communication disorders and dysphagia
* Evidence of a clear awareness and understanding of current national, local, professional and clinical initiatives and developments as relevant to this post
* Demonstrable knowledge of the work of relevant organisations within the voluntary sector in the support of adults with acquired communication disorders and/or dysphagia


Skills & Abilities

* Ability to work well in a team but also to use own initiative
* Good time management
* Ability to prioritise workload appropriately
* Practical relevant IT skills


Experience

* Experience of assessment, diagnosis and full case management of adults with communication disorders and dysphagia, in a range of settings
* Recent clinical experience in the areas of specialist knowledge relevant for this post
* Experience of delivering related training to other professionals


Additional Criteria

* Ability to meet the travel requirements of the role.
