Overview
London North Eastern Railway (LNER) is hiring a Solution Architect. You’ll turn complex business needs into clear technical direction, guiding projects from concept to delivery. You’ll select the right technologies, shape the digital vision, and provide expert governance and assurance across systems that plan, control, resource, and manage train services, crew, and fleet, plus wider business platforms. Working with vendors and partners, you’ll ensure solutions are robust, scalable, compliant, and strategically aligned, while producing high-level models and reference patterns to steer delivery teams.
Within this role you’ll also be involved in;
* Provide architectural oversight and governance across operational and back-office systems (crew, stock, traffic management, fleet, ERP), assuring supplier and partner designs.
* Ensure seamless, standards-compliant integration of planning, scheduling, control and disruption-management systems.
* Turn operational challenges into architectural strategies aligned with business goals.
* Lead architecture reviews to uphold resilience, security, scalability and portability.
* Advise senior stakeholders on solution options, trade-offs and risks.
* Work with programme and project leads so digital investments drive long-term efficiency, safety and transformation.
* Identify and mitigate architectural risks, including regulatory, safety and resilience concerns.
* Guide and assure vendor solutions, ensuring interoperability with enterprise and national rail systems (e.g. ETCS, DAS, ATO).
* Validate technical artefacts to support operational resilience and compliance.
* Promote modular, reusable integration patterns and standardisation.
* Create solution roadmaps, conceptual designs and reference architectures that set the target state and inform legacy consolidation or system replacement.
* Mentor teams and share best practice to embed strong architectural discipline across operational technology.
What you'll need
* Significant experience in operational technology architecture within rail, transport, or other mission-critical real-time environments.
* Deep knowledge of crew and stock management, traffic management, fleet maintenance, and control-centre systems and their integrations.
* Proven track record of architectural assurance and oversight in multi-vendor delivery models.
* Ability to create clear conceptual and high-level design artefacts for communication and direction.
* Broad understanding of operational safety and compliance frameworks for UK rail (or comparable industries).
* Excellent consultancy, problem-solving, and stakeholder engagement skills across technical and operational teams.
* Familiarity with UK rail technology platforms such as Stock & Crew, Traffic Management, external fleet systems, TOPS, or TracSIS Enterprise.
* Awareness of digital rail initiatives (ERTMS/ETCS, ATO, connected control systems).
* Experience shaping technology strategy in highly regulated, safety-critical sectors.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
If you are successful in your application and are new to the business, we will undertake a basic DBS check as part of our pre-employment checks. This only happens once we have conditionally offered you the job. Here we check for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. If there is evidence of an unspent conviction or conditional caution, the details of these are reviewed internally by a cross functional panel on a case by case basis before a final offer of employment is issued. This however may result in any offer being withdrawn. Further information on how we collect and use this data is available on our privacy notice.
Medical screening
We\'re a safety conscious business so for all roles you\'ll need to pass a medical screening and a drugs and alcohol test before we send you an unconditional job offer.
