Job overview

We are looking to recruit New To Care Healthcare assistants (apprenticeship) to join our dynamic and friendly nursing team on Endoscopy.

You will learn new skills, gain a health care qualification, meet amazing colleagues/patients all whilst making a difference caring for people within your local community.

Our HCAs provide some of the most personal and fundamental support to our patients so if you are kind, compassionate and you always act in the best interests of others, then we want to hear from you.

Whether you have previous care experience or not, we will develop you and your skills to allow to thrive within out busy hospital. We offer various career pathways, in depth induction training, and continuous support throughout your journey with us.

We have part time roles available, and also support flexible working where possible. The minimum hours for this role are 30 hours per week due to requirement of undertaking an apprenticeship. There is a variety of shift patterns, including a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern (rotational shifts, with enhanced pay for weekends and nights).

Endoscopy is a highly skilled area within the Surgical unit; around 18 thousand procedures therapeutic and diagnostic procedures are performed throughout the three Endoscopy units; one at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, one at Bassetlaw Hospital and one at Montagu Hospital. This is a 7 day service and you will be required to rotate across all 3 sites.

Applicants must be 16 years and over.

Main duties of the job

You will work alongside nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide a positive experience to our patients and their relatives at times of need. You will support patients in various ways such as:

1. washing and dressing
2. toileting
3. bed making
4. serving patients meals/assisting with feeding
5. helping people to mobilise
6. assisting with patients' overall comfort
7. monitoring patients' conditions by taking temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight – national early warning scores (NEWS)
8. providing encouragement to lifestyle and behaviour changes

It's really important to consider that some aspects of healthcare work can be distressing and unpleasant. You will be expected to help patients with personal care without being embarrassed or feeling awkward. You will need to be able to communicate sympathetically with patients, and distressed relatives, and care for patients who are very sick.

No previous experience as a HCA or in care is necessary, however you must be able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and a compassionate attitude towards working with patients. As well as a commitment to completing all training including the Care Certificate if appropriate.

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria

9. Basic literacy and numeracy skills
10. Willing to complete vocational qualification at level 2.

Desirable criteria

11. Ability to undertake a range of clinical skills as required, including: Vital Signs and Blood Glucose Monitoring

Knowledge & Experience

Desirable criteria

12. Knowledge and understanding of current healthcare issues.
13. Experience in the healthcare setting and / or providing personal care

14. Be able to demonstrate good communication skills, ability to work within a team.
15. Well-motivated, genuine desire to care for people.
