Overview
This is a substantive full-time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in Microvascular Breast Reconstructive surgery. The Breast Reconstruction team provides regional Breast Cancer and Reconstructive surgical expertise across Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol. The post-holder will join the Breast Reconstruction team and participate in elective theatre, outpatient clinics, the Oncoplastic Breast MDT, and the Plastic Surgery Service and On-Call rota.
Main duties
The Plastic Surgery Department covers a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions including skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. Clinics are held in collaboration with other specialists (head and neck surgery, Ortho-Plastics, oncologists, dermatology). Specialist clinics include hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction. The department operates dedicated plastics and burns general theatres, local theatres, and 24-hour access to general emergency theatres. The postholder will have secretarial support and shared office accommodation. An on-call commitment to emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery is required, with a large team of consultants providing the regional service.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
* Hold regular elective theatre and outpatient capacity
* Be part of the Oncoplastic Breast MDT
* Contribute to the Plastic Surgery Service and On-Call rota
* Work within the regional Breast Reconstruction service covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol
Job plan
A formal job plan will be reviewed within three months of commencement in post, with flexible timings arranged in discussion with the Specialty Lead. The plan will be reviewed prospectively and will set out duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Essential: Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent (for non-UK applicants)
* Maintain Full GMC registration
* Must have CCT in Plastic Surgery and be on the GMC Specialist Register at appointment
* Desirable: Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MS)
Experience
* Essential: Recent experience in UK hospital systems; minimum 10 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training; three years as a Senior Registrar or equivalent; training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions; specialist knowledge in microsurgical breast reconstruction; experience in management of common, non-specialised pediatric conditions including trauma
* Desirable: Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship; Breast Microsurgery Fellowship or equivalent
Knowledge
* Essential: Evidence of CME/ training progression; experience in audits; knowledge of NHS management issues; awareness of the political context
* Desirable: Up-to-date audits; general management course
Skills
* Essential: Proven teaching ability; willingness to teach medical undergraduates and postgraduates
* Desirable: Research in breast reconstruction/microsurgery; effective teaching; ability to gain trust and influence; willingness to undertake further research
Leadership and teamwork
* Essential: Ability to build and maintain effective teams; positive attitude to wider healthcare team; strong leadership and change management skills
* Desirable: Leadership or management course or activity
