This is an exciting opportunity to join the Teenage & Young Adult (TYA) Team at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and play a pivotal role in the on-going commitment to promote and enhance the quality of holistic supportive care provided to all our TYA patients. This will be a cross-site role with the postholder based on the TYA Unit at the Royal Marsden Sutton but providing an outreach service to the Fulham Road branch of the Royal Marsden, as required.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join a team dedicated to improving the care and overall patient experience of Teenagers and Young Adults (TYA) with cancer. The TYA CNS will work with a wide range of Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) colleagues based at The Royal Marsden, to ensure all TYA patients (aged 16-24) receive age-appropriate care, high quality social and emotional support, alongside their clinical and oncological management.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with The Royal Marsden site-specific teams and Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) to develop, implement and evaluate existing specialist services, ensuring young people receive the highest standard of clinical care with equity of service provision across sites at the Royal Marsden where TYAs receive their oncology care. Whilst the patient’s site-specific Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will remain responsible for oversight of their treatment pathway, the TYA CNS will provide an essential role in supporting the team to meet the holistic needs of the TYA as a young person as they navigate through the challenges of adolescence into adulthood, whilst also having a cancer diagnosis.
As a nursing expert, the post holder will demonstrate a high level of expertise caring for TYAs (16-24 years) and be a resource of specialist knowledge across the patient pathway, providing advice, education and support to staff, patients their families and carers. The post holder will be expected to work closely with the TYA Lead Nurse to contribute to ongoing development of clinical practice, and standards of care within the TYA service including the development of policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines.

The Teenage Cancer Trust TYA Clinical Nurse Specialist will be expected to demonstrate a high level of practice in both their direct care of patients and in their ability to plan and develop services to support cancer care. Through the key skills of leadership, innovation, and clinical expertise they will facilitate and deliver holistic care that is patient centred and delivered with compassion, as well as being safe and effective.

To assist in the provision of professional and clinical leadership and expertise in the care of the patients under your care, acting as a resource and consultant to provide information and support to patients, carers and staff.
To develop or contribute to the formulation of policies.
To develop or contribute to the formulation of patient information.
To liaise effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary health care team to help achieve a synchronised specialist service.
To provide informal and formal teaching, for patients, staff and carers as relevant e.g. academic courses provided by The Royal Marsden School.
To work alongside the TYA lead nurse to continue to help develop TYA service provision at The Royal Marsden in Chelsea to create enhanced equity of service to that received by TYAs at the Sutton site.
To help support nurse-led clinics including the TYA MDT clinic and transition clinic where appropriate.
To prepare, participate, and contribute to the weekly TYA MDT meeting, working closely alongside the TYA MDT Coordinator.
Person specification
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
* Registered Nurse with active NMC registration.
* First level degree in related subject or prepared to work towards this
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Be willing to undertake Trust CNS role development programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies.
* Research qualification
* Level 2 psychological skills training as per recognised course or working towards this.
* Advanced Communications Skills training or willingness to work towards.
* Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subjects.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
* Relevant post registration experience, at Band 6 or above, in cancer or palliative care.
* Experience of multiprofessional teamwork.
* Familiarity with the specific health and social needs of Teenagers and Young Adults with cancer.
* Experience teaching
* Experience of research.
* Leadership and management experience
* Able to conduct reflective practice and participate in clinical supervision facilitated by a level 3/4 practitioner. Evidence of advanced communication skills.

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
