Social Sciences Books Intern, Springer Nature Opening Doors Programme

Are you looking for an internship that provides hands-on experience in academic books publishing and the chance to make connections at one of the largest publishers of education and research content?

The Springer Nature Opening Doors internship is a paid opportunity in London for students and recent graduates to gain experience in research, education and science news publishing in our journals, books or magazines.

Many perspectives and lived experiences remain underrepresented in the publishing industry. This underrepresentation has historically affected a wide range of groups, including Black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour, first‑generation university students, people from socio‑economically disadvantaged backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, people from underrepresented social castes, religious minorities and people with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions.

We are looking for talented candidates from all backgrounds, with excellent skills in a range of fields, and we are committed to creating an inclusive internship, with a cohort that reflects a broad range of voices and experiences.

The successful applicant will spend six months within the Social Sciences Books team, part of the Research Publishing division of Springer Nature. If selected for this internship, you will work closely with a team of acquisitions editors across the Social Sciences (fields including Sociology, Anthropology, Social Policy, Gender Studies, Migration Studies, Childhood and Family Studies, and Language and Linguistics), assisting in the management of our prestigious books programmes. Specific tasks may include assisting in the peer review process for new books, identification of potential authors and publishing opportunities (including use of data-driven tools to identify growth areas where there is a gap in the literature), helping authors prepare manuscripts for production, ensuring information in databases is accurate and up-to-date, writing and editing marketing texts, attending internal and external meetings, and related duties.

What’s in it for you?

1. Developing your editorial, market research, project management and interpersonal skills
2. A paid internship, equivalent to the London living wage.
3. Hands-on experience at one of the largest academic publishing groups and the opportunity to learn from experienced publishing professionals
4. Support from a buddy from one of Springer Nature’s employee networks
5. Access to career development, training and events, including an overview of different business areas at Springer Nature and advice on the job application process
6. The opportunity to work closely with authors and editors on book projects across the Social Sciences
7. Familiarising yourself with every stage of the book publishing life cycle, from initial idea to proposal evaluation, manuscript development to publication

About us:

Springer Nature’s Books Group is a global team encompassing hundreds of editors, several imprints and specializing in cutting-edge academic books. We publish monographs, textbooks, professional and reference works, in print and online, in subjects ranging from Political Science, Economics and History, to Literature, Linguistics and Sociology. Among our publications you will find original works by many of the foremost scholars in the world, including Nobel laureates and internationally recognized experts.

About you:

8. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme, or a recent graduate preferably in a Social Sciences discipline
9. Available to start at the beginning of June 2026 for an internship of six months
10. Strong interest in books and/or research publishing
11. Excellent communication and English language skills – both written and verbal
12. Familiarity with MS office software would be a bonus (particularly Word, Outlook, Excel)
13. Some office experience would be welcome but is not required

How to apply: Application deadline 9th March 2026

Please send a CV and a short supporting statement in a cover letter (no more than 500 words) that explains what you will bring to this role.

The internship will start at the beginning of June 2026 for a duration of 6 months and is based in Springer Nature’s London office on a hybrid working model with up to three days a week working from home.

If you have any access needs related to disability, neurodivergence or a chronic condition, please contact us at EMEAC so we can make all necessary accommodations.

If you're looking to kick-start your career in research publishing, apply today and you could be part of the next generation shaping our industry.

There are additional intern positions available across Springer Nature as part of this internship programme - find out more about other available opportunities.
