PC to Sergeant Promotion

Applications are invited from internal and external substantive Police Constables on promotion, as well as transfer opportunities for external substantive Sergeants.

Applicants must be suitably experienced, competent and credible for immediate promotion to rank of Sergeant in the West Midlands Police.

Constables must have a minimum of two years’ police service and have successfully completed their probation period along with having passed their NPPF Sergeants Examination of Law and Procedures.

West Midlands Police are looking for Sergeants to fill roles across the force area and functions.

Role

Monitor and manage the performance of the team and drive improvements in performance and standards.

Supervise a team, managing their well-being, ensuring high levels of motivation to enable an effective front-line policing service.

Partners

Work effectively with internal and external partners to ensure an effective and efficient service to the public.

Process

Internal applicants must supply the following information on the application form:

* Collar number
* All internal candidates are required to have a conversation regarding their suitability for immediate promotion with their respective line manager before applying.
* Applicants must obtain a signed form confirming the support of their Chief Inspector (or equivalent).
* Applicants must not have a live sanction from misconduct proceedings. Applicants under investigation can still apply but if they are successful, cannot be posted until the investigation has been concluded and would also be dependent upon the outcome of the investigation.
* 5 years’ posting history on your application. If you have less than 5 years’ posting history, please include your postings to date. This can be added in the ‘Previous Employment’ section on your application. Please do not add as a separate document.
* Please include details of any operationally relevant qualifications/courses, e.g. PIP accreditation, coaching skills, etc.
* Advise of any limited duties when applying for the process. All flexible working arrangements will be reviewed before posting. In applying for promotion, you are accepting that you can be posted anywhere across the Force area to any Sergeant role.

The Selection Process

The selection process will consist of the following steps:

* Promotion team to check candidate eligibility
* All eligible candidates invited to an in person Operational Briefing
* Successful candidates invited to interviews
* The interview will be in front of a Superintendent and Chief Inspector

* Operational Briefing Results: w/c 26/09

* Results: 03/11

Location: Various, West Midlands

Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism Clearance scrutiny prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.

Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and if required a fitness test.
