Job Overview
We are actively seeking a Quality Officer to join the Blood Sciences team. This is an exciting opportunity and would suit an individual with an interest in quality management. The role is varied and involves development and improvement of the Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Blood Sciences Reception, Immunology and Point of Care Testing services provided at Severn Pathology. Quality Management plays a pivotal role in service expansion, whilst maintaining the highest standards for our patients.
As a Quality Officer, you will work alongside the Quality Managers in Blood Sciences to play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with ISO 15189:2022, BSQR, HTA and relevant screening programmes, and maintaining laboratory compliance. You will provide support and training to colleagues, ensuring standardisation and development of laboratory processes, through key activities such as internal audit, production of key performance indicators, quality improvement, and creation and review of policies and procedures.
This is a permanent position to work with a great team and expand your knowledge across Blood Sciences.
Main duties of the job
* To assist the Blood Sciences Quality Managers in developing, implementing and maintaining the Quality Management Systems (QMS) for Clinical Biochemistry, Blood Sciences Reception, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Immunology and Point of Care Testing.
* To contribute to the continuous improvement of the Blood Sciences laboratories including Sample Reception, Point of Care Testing, and Blood Transfusion using quality improvement techniques, good teamwork and communication.
* To deputise for the Blood Sciences Quality Managers as required.
* To provide training for Blood Sciences staff in aspects of the QMS as directed by the Blood Sciences Quality Managers.
* To undertake and manage audits as directed by the Blood Sciences Quality Managers, identifying points of weakness and gaps in compliance.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Staff
To assist the Quality Managers in the delivery of QMS training to laboratory staff, including training of staff to conduct internal audits, shadowing trainee auditors, and collating evidence of competence.
To participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
Laboratory
* To work in accordance with the departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these documents as required.
* To participate in quality audits and other quality improvement projects, promoting continuous improvement activities and implementing action plans.
* To ensure that quality audits and quality improvement project activity are accurately documented and recorded for assurance purposes.
* To assist in external audits as required and generating audit response reports.
* To assist in Internal Quality Assurance reviews.
* To have awareness of health and safety risk management, including reporting any adverse incidents and monitoring for trends.
* To participate in Quality risk management activities including, performing risk assessments for e.g. prospective change or following non‑conformances.
* To process new equipment and help manage the control of the asset records in the Q‑Pulse Quality Management software.
* To assist the Quality managers in the logging, tracking and final review of nonconformances, ensuring CAPA is fit for purpose and actions are completed timely.
* To complete and maintain documents (written and electronic) to ensure data integrity in a timely and accurate manner.
* To assist the Quality managers in the delivery of QMS training to laboratory staff.
* To assist in research and development projects as required.
* To deputise for senior members of staff as appropriate (e.g. Attending meetings).
* To participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
* To undertake continued professional development.
* To participate in any other reasonable tasks commensurate with the grade.
* Produce KPI data reports as required.
* To participate in risk management of the department including reporting of adverse incidents.
Communication
Communicate with patients, clinicians, laboratory and nursing staff from North Bristol Trust and other NHS organisations regarding issues or incidents noted.
IM+T
To be competent in using the departmental computer systems.
Professional
To participate in continual professional development by attending in‑house or external training sessions as appropriate and maintaining personal training records as required.
Person specification
Education
Essential criteria
* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
Desirable criteria
* Quality Management qualification.
* Post graduate qualification.
* Quality management experience e.g. audit.
* Knowledge of compliance standards e.g. accreditation, legislation.
