Anaesthetic Locum Appointment for training post in
Remote and Rural Anaesthesia (Ref: 213730)
Fixed term from February 2026 for 6 months
Full Time – 40 hours per week
Salary Range £45,504 - £71,550 per annum (pro rata)
Distant Island Allowance of £2,380 per annum (pro rata)
Applications are invited for unique and exciting Anaesthetic Locum Appointment for training post in Remote and Rural Anaesthesia. The posts offer experience in a remote island hospital and will be of interest to those at ST6/ST7 stage of anaesthetic training, who are considering work in the more remote parts of the UK and who wish to get broad experience in a senior generalist post prior to becoming a consultant.
The post is recognised by The Royal College of Anaesthetists for advanced training in Anaesthesia and is located in the Gilbert Bain Hospital, which is in The Shetland Islands, 100 miles north of the Scottish mainland.
The appointees will be expected to become involved in elective and emergency provision of anaesthetic and critical care services to all age groups, with support of the anaesthetic and other teams in the hospital, the Scottish retrieval services and colleagues in mainland hospitals. They will also have the opportunity to experience non-clinical work in the hospital with opportunities to see hospital management at a variety of Board and committee levels and to contribute to training throughout the Board.
The post will commence to suit the individual circumstances of the applicant and their training, likely from February 2026 for 6 months.

Applicants must have an MBChB or recognised equivalent and FRCA or recognised equivalent. Applicants must currently be in a Type I training post and hold a National/Visiting Training Number and must be in either ST6 or ST7 at the commencement of the post.
