You’ll play a vital role supporting our scientific and technical teams in delivering world-class research. This is a varied and rewarding role, offering hands-on experience and plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual with a “can do” attitude, ready to contribute to our Scientific Computing Administration Team, which spans twelve members across Harwell and Daresbury Laboratory in Warrington, Cheshire. As an apprentice, you’ll gain practical experience in business and administrative tasks, helping our team run smoothly and efficiently. You’ll develop skills in organisation, communication, and project support—all while making a real impact in a professional environment. Why join the Scientific Computing Administration Team at STFC? The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) Administration Team is seeking a motivated and organised Administration Apprentice to join our friendly, well-established group. In this role, you’ll help support exciting scientific projects by taking meeting minutes, keeping track of budgets, and helping to organise conferences and events both on-site and off-site. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop valuable office and IT skills, and be part of a friendly team that makes a real difference to our research. Qualifications gained Level 3 Business Administrator apprenticeship https://skillsengland.education.gov.uk/apprenticeships/st0070-v1-0 What you’ll learn: To understand the organisation and its structure The importance of following laws, regulations and policies To produce accurate records and documents To communicate well through different methods To use relevant project management tools To make effective decisions To complete tasks to a high standard, managing priorities and time To build positive relationships within a team and across the organisation IT skills to fulfil the role Training provider Warrington and Vale Royal College: Business Apprenticeship | Warrington & Vale Royal College Block release - 1 day at college per week for 12 weeks Monthly assessor meetings - workplace visits or online What You’ll Be Doing – Day-to-day responsibilities Update and maintain the department organogram. Support the Scientific Computing Seminar Series. Support the Scientific Computing Events Coordinator with department events. Attend and support workshops as required - Be available to travel/work to support events and visit other STFC sites as required. Arrange accommodation and travel (both overseas and UK) Organise internal meetings Entry Requirements The below criteria will be scored during Shortlisting (S), Interview (I) or both (S&I). We are looking for the following: GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade 4/C or above) (S) An awareness of basic health and safety (I) Enthusiastic and motivated to learn, both in the workplace and through formal training (I) Confident using a computer, especially tools like Word, Excel, and Outlook (S&I) A genuine interest in the work of STFC (S&I) Builds relationships by being friendly and approachable (I) Excellent team working ability (S&I) Good at keeping things on track and getting tasks done on time (S&I) Important Information To complete the apprenticeship, you will need to evidence passes at 9-4 or AC in GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English.
