An exciting opportunity has become available through Cancer Alliance funding to support prostate pathway performance improvement. This funding is for a 12‑month period. Due to the urgency of the work, we strongly encourage candidates who are able to start promptly to apply. The role will be based at Bedford Hospital, with an expectation of cross‑site working across Bedfordshire Hospitals.


Main duties of the job

The Prostate Pathway Specialist role has been developed in response to evolving models of healthcare delivery, with a strong focus on advanced clinical expertise.

The post holder will provide expert, evidence‑based advice and specialist clinical input within the prostate pathway, working collaboratively with colleagues to support patients and their families.

They will contribute to the nurse‑led service for patients referred with suspected prostate cancer, including triaging referrals and arranging appropriate investigations as part of the diagnostic pathway across both Bedfordshire Hospital sites.

The role also involves supporting patients as they transition into medical or clinical oncology care at the appropriate stage, ensuring smooth handover of keyworker responsibilities. In addition, the post holder will offer specialist nursing advice and help facilitate the safe repatriation of cancer patients back into community services where appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of practice, working with advanced autonomy in line with national prostate cancer guidelines, BHFT policies, and the NMC Code of Conduct.
* To deliver evidence‑based nursing care, using professional judgement and experience to make safe, well‑informed clinical decisions.
* To carry out holistic assessments using a range of methods, forming valid, reliable, and person‑centred conclusions that appropriately manage risk and reflect the patient’s needs, context, and culture.
* To receive and assess patient referrals using highly developed clinical knowledge, diagnostic skills, and expertise, initiating appropriate diagnostic and treatment pathways.
* To support nurse‑led clinics, including coordinating diagnostic investigations and assisting with targeted prostate biopsies.
* To work as part of the multidisciplinary team delivering specialist investigations for patients with lower urinary tract symptoms.
* To work alongside the ANP for Prostate, advising the multidisciplinary team on nursing practice and the nursing contribution to patient care, including attendance at the weekly MDT meeting.

Person specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse, with degree or equivalent level of experience
* Demonstrate evidence of ability to study at Level 7 (either previous Level 6 or Level 7 study)
* Commitment to studying for any required training needed
* Non‑medical Prescriber Post‑registration qualification in specialist area
* Teaching and assessing


Experience

* Relevant clinical experience within Urology
* Experience with Urology cancers


Knowledge

* Able to analyse data and provide written reports
* Excellent understanding and awareness of confidentiality
* Confidence in own knowledge base and understanding of when to seek guidance
* Knowledge of common treatments in Prostate cancer


Personal skills

* Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations, utilising decision‑making skills to take appropriate action
* Ability to recognise own limitations, working within scope of practice, acting on feedback from clinical supervisors when required
* Team focused/player
* Ability to work under pressure
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Aligned to the Trust values
* Evidence of delivering educational teaching
* Demonstration of leadership in clinical practice
* Previous experience of managing a team

All new staff will be subject to a probationary period covering their first six months in post.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
