Overview
The COPD team is seeking a dynamic nurse to complement an established team. The post holder will provide high-level specialist respiratory knowledge, delivering care, guidance and support to patients, carers and healthcare professionals managing COPD on inpatient wards and in outpatient settings. The role involves assessing and care planning, medication review, support, referrals (secondary and primary care), educating patients, families and caregivers, and coordinating care. You will support consultant colleagues in clinics and participate in MDT meetings to optimise care. The post holder will work independently and as part of the MDT after a supervised period, with ongoing education opportunities after appointment. A flexible, positive approach, excellent communication skills and established IT skills are essential. Participation in audit and service development is expected. Respiratory experience of 2 years is essential. The role covers both City and Queen Medical Centre campuses.
Main duties
* The COPD nurse specialists review inpatients admitted with an exacerbation of COPD, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care based on evidence-based principles.
* Provide specialist input for patients admitted for non-COPD reasons where COPD impacts management.
* Review COPD patients in specialist outpatient settings in a nurse clinic.
* Support consultant COPD specialist clinics.
* Refer patients to MDT members across primary and secondary care.
* Attend specialist MDTs within secondary care and between primary and secondary care.
* Actively participate in clinical audit to improve patient care.
* Demonstrate competent IT skills and serve as a specialist knowledge resource for the wider NUH team.
* Maintain clear communication and documentation for a multi-professional audience.
Qualifications and requirements
Experience
* Essential: Minimum of 2 years experience working with patients with respiratory conditions.
* Desirable: Basic knowledge around COPD and willingness to learn; involvement in audit.

Training and qualifications
* Essential: Current UK NMC registration in adult nursing.
* Desirable: Specialist courses (e.g., Respiratory, COPD-specific, Spirometry, palliative care).

* Essential: Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication; basic IT skills (e-mail, Excel); able to present and receive clinical information to a multi-professional audience; can minimise barriers to communication.
Analytical and judgement skills
* Desirable: Evidence of data collection, audit and analysis.
Planning and organisation
* Essential: Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care; prioritise workload; work as part of the MDT and independently; recognise learning needs and communicate limits of competence.
* Desirable: Evidence of involvement in MDT meetings/discussions.
Other requirements
* Essential: Flexible and adaptable to meet workload and service requirements.
