Community Nursery Nurse

An exciting opportunity for a Community Nursery Nurse post has arisen to support the Coventry Health Visiting Teams. Working with challenging and vulnerable families in the city requires respect and sensitivity at all times using suitable communication skills to support parents in caring for their children. You will develop a therapeutic relationship with clients to promote a trusting relationship, respecting the diverse needs of our community. You will support clinics and promote positive health messages. You will be carrying out Developmental Reviews and referring children into additional services depending on need. Behaviour management is an essential skill in delivering positive parenting with an understanding of culture, beliefs and mental health and well‑being.


Main duties of the job

The Community Nursery Nurse will work both independently and as part of the health visiting team to promote positive outcomes for children and young people. The main duties of the role include carrying out developmental assessments and supporting parents/carers by offering advice and support/care interventions on a wide range of health issues; including toileting, bedwetting, behaviour management, and parenting advice, including facilitating parenting groups.


Job responsibilities

* Undertake delegated work from the health visitor to improve health outcomes for children, young people and families in the community setting, in a variety of ways including 1:1 work, group work, home visiting, nursery and school setting and telephone advice.
* Undertake delegated pieces of work with families who request support with their child's weight.
* Submit accurate and timely activity and outcome data to ensure that key performance indicator targets set by the Trust and/or the local authority are monitored and outcomes achieved.
* Undertake developmental assessments and support health needs using ages and stages questionnaires (ASQ) and schedule of growth skills (SOGS); undertake tasks delegated by the health visitor including accepting and responding to re‑assigned alerts, delivering brief interventions and feedback progress to the health visitor.
* Have knowledge and understanding of current child protection guidelines, recognise if children are in need of protection and report concerns to health visitor in line with local safeguarding policy and procedures.
* Support the team to deliver health public health initiatives consistent with national/local messages.
* Support the health visiting team at Open Baby Clinics.
* Respond appropriately to general enquiries from parents/carers and school/nursery staff referring back to the health visitor.
* Act as a resource to nurseries, parents/carers and provide information on health initiatives such as healthy eating.
* Follow and adhere to the standards and guidelines set for Health Visiting to ensure a consistent approach.
* Support the uptake of the childhood immunisation programme when opportunities arise with contacts with children, young people and families.
* Ensure that confidentiality is upheld at all times, as per trust guidelines.
* Attend the Trust statutory and mandatory training programme specific to the role ensuring that training completed follows the essential skills policy including regular appraisal.
* Participate in/ access group or team clinical supervision.
* Participate in and contribute to team/locality meetings to keep up to date with trust information.
* Maintain and keep contemporaneous records in whatever form they present, e.g. text, phone calls.
* Participate in clinical audits and clinical benchmarking to improve service care and delivery.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience required

* Maintain a professional attitude at all times, in the best interests of the profession and in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct.
* Work to agreed Trust Policies and procedures which support the Clinical Governance agenda.
* Review and reflect on own practice through accessing supervision.
* Prioritise and attend team meetings to ensure communication within and outside the team.
* Use information technology securely and conform with the organisation's information governance policies.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Foundation degree, Assistant practitioner / NVQ level 3 in early years care / BTEC in early years or equivalent.
* Completed Common Assessment Framework training or willing to undertake training.
* Must have a willingness and commitment to undertake training as required for the role.


Experience

* Must have a minimum of two years’ experience working with children and families.
* Experience in giving health advice to parents/carers and other agencies such as education staff.
* Understanding of health promotion activities that promote positive outcomes for children and young people.
* Experience using Microsoft Office/Word/Excel and ability to use social media (Twitter and Facebook).


Skills

* Demonstrate knowledge of the role of the school nurse team in the promotion of health and wellbeing.
* Demonstrate understanding of the need for confidentiality in all aspects of the work.
* Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding vulnerable children/young people and adults.
* Ability to work in a team and independently.
* Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with colleagues, other professionals and children, young people and their families.


Other Job Requirements

* Full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
* Willing to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.
* Legally entitled to work in this country.
* Prepared to work between 8am - 8pm and on weekends if required.
* Non-smoker whilst on duty.

Salary

£28,392 to £31,157 a year pro rata.
