Job Purpose
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to contribute to the Scottish Health and Wellbeing Improvement Research Network (SHINE) and the MRC-funded UK DATAMIND projects. The postholder will work with Dr. Jo Inchley and other project staff within the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit and will make a leading contribution to the collection, management, analyses, and reporting of large-scale survey data and other school-based research. You will also contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and funding proposals. The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge and skills in survey research and statistical analyses, along with a comprehensive and current understanding of adolescent mental health issues. This post is available full-time until March 2026.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Lead in planning and conducting research activities in accordance with project deliverables and strategies.
2. Document research outputs, including data analysis, interpretation, maintaining records, and drafting reports and papers.
3. Develop and maintain a strong research profile and reputation, including publishing in high-profile refereed journals and contributing to the research impact.
4. Review literature, understand research challenges, and develop research strategies.
5. Present work at conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance research profile.
6. Identify funding sources and assist in developing proposals to secure research funding.
7. Develop collaborations within and outside the university to support research activities.
8. Participate actively in research group meetings and activities to promote knowledge sharing and research culture.
9. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students and junior team members.
10. Handle administrative tasks related to research activities, including budget management.
11. Contribute to teaching activities and related administrative tasks as assigned.
12. Stay updated with advances in the field and engage in professional development.
13. Undertake other duties as required to support the research group and university objectives.
14. Contribute to enhancing the university’s international profile in line with strategic goals.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
* PhD or equivalent in relevant fields such as public health, mental health, social science, or psychology, or comparable professional experience.
* Up-to-date knowledge of child and adolescent mental health issues.
* Understanding of school health promotion and whole school approaches to wellbeing.
Skills
* Research experience appropriate for an early career researcher.
* Skills in quantitative research and statistical analysis.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting complex data clearly.
* Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work independently.
Experience
* Experience working with large survey datasets, including data management and analysis.
* Proficiency with statistical software such as R, SPSS, or Stata.
* Proven track record of research publication and presentation.
* Experience engaging with non-academic stakeholders to maximize research impact.
Desirable
* Experience in school-based research.
* Experience as a lead author on scientific publications.
Terms and Conditions
Salary: Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. Full-time, funding until 30 March 2026. The university fosters an inclusive and ambitious community, valuing integrity and curiosity. Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and may require a Skilled Worker visa.
