Oaktree Academy is a specialist Alternative Provision dedicated to supporting children and young people who face barriers to learning within mainstream education. Our pupils often have a range of social, emotional, behavioural, and mental health needs (SEMH). We provide a nurturing, trauma-informed environment where students feel safe, respected, and understood.
Job Purpose
To work under the direction of senior staff to provide high-quality pastoral care and emotional support for pupils, helping them to feel safe, secure, and ready to learn. This role focuses on building positive relationships, promoting wellbeing, supporting emotional regulation, and encouraging personal development.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide daily pastoral support to pupils, acting as a consistent and trusted adult.
* Help students develop emotional resilience, self-confidence, and positive self-identity.
* Support pupils during times of crisis, distress, or dysregulation using de-escalation and trauma-informed strategies.
* Monitor wellbeing, mood, and engagement, reporting concerns to the safeguarding or pastoral team.
* Liaise with families, carers, and external agencies to ensure joined-up support.
* Lead or support small group or 1:1 pastoral interventions (e.g. emotional literacy, anger management, social skills).
* Support positive behaviour through consistency, structure, and strong relationships.
* Assist with transitions, arrivals, and departures to promote a calm and welcoming start/end to the day.
* Work collaboratively with teaching staff to create a nurturing learning environment.
* Promote a culture of respect, empathy, and inclusion across the school.
Person Specification
Essential:
* Experience working with vulnerable young people, particularly those with SEMH needs.
* Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
* Calm, compassionate, and patient approach to behaviour and emotional support.
* A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable:
* Experience in a pastoral, youth work, mentoring or similar role.
* Understanding of trauma-informed practice and restorative approaches.
* Relevant qualifications in youth work, mental health, or pastoral care.
* Team Teach or other behaviour support training (training can be provided).
