Description Looking to join a friendly and collegiate Division within The Office of the Advocate General? The Office of the Advocate General (OAG) is the UK Government's (UKG) Scottish Legal Team. Working in OAG offers a unique opportunity to deal with all litigation raised in Scotland for or against Her Majesty’s Government (with the exception of work outsourced to private practice partner firms). Within OAG there are two litigation Divisions: HMRC Division and the Litigation Division which includes the immigration branch and two devolution and general litigation branches. The immigration branch handles judicial reviews and statutory appeals in the Court of Session in a Human Rights context. Whilst cases are predominantly dealt with in the Court of Session, the branch sometimes represent Home Office in the Upper Tribunal and the Sheriff Court, and occasionally cases to the Supreme Court. On a day to day basis the immigration team instructs Junior and Senior Counsel in a variety of interesting and important areas such as asylum, unlawful detention, human rights and human trafficking. As Paralegal, you will assist in challenging, interesting and varied casework which has a very real human interest. The involvement in cases exposes you to an up to date picture of migration across the world and the study and analysis of country specific information. The role will enable you to develop an excellent knowledge of current and foreign affairs. Responsibilities Providing high quality, proactive and effective advice, legal research and support to solicitors in their conduct of litigation by preparing, lodging and uploading court documents, drafting/enrolling motions and opposition to motions, compiling bundles of documents for hearings and liaising with and instructing counsel to act on behalf of the Home Office. Liaising with the Keeper’s office to fix hearings with parties on the other side with reference to Counsel’s diaries and advising the Advocates Clerks when fixed. Timely and professional communication with clients, colleagues, court clerks and counsel in connection with litigation. Sharing responsibility for managing the Office’s Legal Services inbox. This will include proactively and effectively dealing with the items in the inbox, processing specifications of documents and other court orders served on UK government departments in Scotland, and assisting with the allocation of outsourced litigation work for UK government departments. Assist the devolution teams within the division in summarising and recording straightforward devolution and compatibility issues for a database. Drafting straightforward submissions to the Advocate General for Scotland. Coordinating Freedom of Information (FOI) responses on a wide range of matters, allocating the requests and working with colleagues to help gather the information, draft the responses and issue responses on time. Assisting in maintaining a bank of up to date, high quality resources in the Division's Knowledge Bank and working with solicitors to take forward work improving the Division's knowledge management systems. Drafting and negotiating judicial accounts of expenses with opposing agents and law accountants. Instructing and liaising with law accountants and clients on more complex accounts. Appearing at diets of taxation where necessary. OAG has offices in Queen Elizabeth House, the UK Government Hub situated near Waverley station, and Dover House in London. This role is based in Queen Elizabeth House. OAG currently operates a hybrid working model. All staff are expected to attend the office when business needs require and to spend at least 40% of their working time in the office or on official business (measured over a four-week period).
