Offer description

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

How’s this for job satisfaction? At Scottish Water, we look after one of Scotland’s most precious natural resources. From source to tap, we protect the quality of our water while safeguarding the environment for future generations.

An exciting and high-profile opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Finance Technical Specialist – Tax and Treasury Team Leader to join our Treasury, Tax and Insurance (TTI) team within the Finance Directorate.

The TTI team is a collaborative, specialist team based at our Bridge office in Stepps near Glasgow, playing a critical role in ensuring robust tax and treasury governance and compliance across the Scottish Water Group.

Sound good? We’re currently looking for a Finance Technical Specialist – Tax and Treasury Team Leader to join us.

What you’ll do

In this role, you’ll lead and develop a small team, providing clear direction, coaching and support to ensure the consistent delivery of a high-quality tax and treasury service. You’ll work closely with colleagues to review and improve processes and controls, ensuring they remain effective, efficient and aligned to current requirements.

You’ll lead the delivery of corporation tax compliance across the Scottish Water Group, taking responsibility for the preparation and submission of corporation tax returns, country-by-country reporting and compliance with BEPS requirements. You’ll also support year-end statutory and regulatory reporting and play an important role in helping the organisation achieve the Fair Tax Mark each year while maintaining its HMRC low-risk status.

Acting as a Subject Matter Expert in corporation tax, you’ll work with stakeholders across the business to support and enhance the delivery of other direct tax obligations, ensuring a consistent and controlled approach to compliance. You’ll also coordinate the Senior Accounting Officer (SAO) process, ensuring all activities are delivered in line with requirements and supported by appropriate documentation and controls.

The role includes engaging with HMRC on audits and enquiries, as well as providing clear, practical advice to colleagues across the business. You’ll identify and manage tax risks, support the implementation of appropriate actions, and contribute to system developments and wider business initiatives where there are tax implications.

Alongside your tax responsibilities, you’ll have oversight of treasury activities, particularly monitoring cashflow and ensuring the organisation maintains sufficient liquidity in line with its risk appetite. This will involve supporting effective cash management processes and ensuring strong governance and controls are in place.

You’ll keep up to date with changes in tax legislation and support their implementation across the organisation, while also contributing to the development of the Group’s Tax Strategy and engaging with external bodies, including the Water UK Direct Tax Group.

You’ll report to the Tax, Treasury and Insurance Manager and work closely with colleagues across Finance and the wider business, building strong and collaborative relationships.

What you’ll need

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring significant experience in corporation tax within a large or complex organisation, along with a strong track record of delivering high-quality compliance and reporting. You’ll hold a relevant professional qualification, such as CIOT, ATT or ACCA, or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience.

You’ll be a clear and confident communicator, with the ability to explain complex tax matters in a straightforward way to non-technical stakeholders. You’ll also have experience of leading or supporting others and be able to foster a collaborative, high-performing team environment.

Strong analytical and organisational skills are essential, along with the ability to plan and manage your workload effectively and meet deadlines. You’ll also bring good IT skills, including Excel, and experience of working with tax or financial systems.

It would be great if you also had

Experience of other direct taxes or exposure to treasury activities, particularly cashflow forecasting and liquidity management, would be beneficial. Experience of Alphatax software would also be advantageous.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 8 level. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £54,776. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £74,386.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on the 12th June 2026

We operate Balanced Hybrid working at Scottish Water and we encourage people to work half their time in a Scottish Water location.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.

A few final things worth knowing…

Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!

Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.

As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.

Please note, Scottish Water takes the safety, health and wellbeing of our employees, colleagues and customers very seriously and as such you may be subject to Drug & Alcohol testing in line with our policy.

Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
