1:1 SEN Support Teacher – Secondary School

Purpose of Role

To provide personalised teaching and learning support for a designated pupil with Special Educational Needs (SEN), ensuring they can access the curriculum, develop independence, and make progress academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

1:1 Pupil Support

1. Deliver individualised teaching and interventions based on the pupil’s SEN profile and EHCP.

2. Adapt lesson content, resources, and teaching strategies to meet the pupil’s needs.

3. Support the pupil’s access to learning across different subjects and settings.

4. Develop and implement personalised learning plans and behaviour strategies.

5. Promote independence, confidence, and emotional regulation.

Classroom & Learning Support

6. Work collaboratively with subject teachers to differentiate work and plan support.

7. Monitor understanding and provide targeted guidance without over-reliance.

8. Encourage positive participation and engagement in class.

9. Support the use of assistive technology or specialised equipment where required.

Progress Monitoring

10. Track academic, behavioural, and social progress against targets.

11. Provide regular feedback to teachers, SENCO, and parents when appropriate.

12. Maintain clear records, observations, and evidence of progress.

13. Contribute to EHCP reviews, SEN meetings, and multi-agency work.

Safeguarding, Wellbeing & Inclusion

14. Uphold safeguarding responsibilities in line with school policy.

15. Promote inclusion and support the pupil to develop positive peer relationships.

16. Assist with emotional regulation, wellbeing strategies, and resilience-building.

17. Respond appropriately to behavioural challenges using de-escalation techniques.

Skills & Experience

18. Experience supporting pupils with SEN in a secondary school setting.

19. Strong understanding of SEND, EHCP processes, and differentiated teaching.

20. Skilled in using intervention strategies relevant to the pupil’s needs (, ASD support, SEMH strategies, literacy/numeracy interventions).

21. Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

22. Ability to build strong, supportive relationships with pupils.

25. Calm and solution-focused in challenging situations.

26. Committed to helping pupils overcome barriers and succeed.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
