Application deadline: 12pm (midday) on Thursday 19 June 2025

About the role:

The British Museum is embarking on one of the most significant cultural redevelopment projects undertaken anywhere in the world. The Masterplan will transform the Museum for the 21st century while staying open, maintaining the founding commitment to keep the collection safe and accessible to the public for generations to come.

The Senior Engagement Manager: Events will be responsible for designing a calendar of engagement opportunities for supporters and Members, from large scale events with thousands of guests (such as Members' evenings) through to smaller scale events (such as tours of the Museum's Conservation studios).

Key areas of responsibility:

* Plan an annual calendar of engagement activities for supporters and Members. Ensure that each group of supporters has a clear engagement plan, that events are used for multiple audiences when appropriate, and that tailored programming is paced appropriately throughout the year.
* Meet targets and KPIs for income and attendance at events, liaising with team Heads across Development to agree appropriate targets for their area.
* Manage a substantial budget and ensure the engagement activity programme is sustainable (e.g. identifying which aspects should be charged-for) and finding space within the busy Museum diary to deliver a high ROI for the Museum.
* Work with curatorial colleagues across the Museum to generate ideas for engaging activities, ensuring that supporters can hear about the Museum's latest work. Ensure that requests of curatorial colleagues are sustainable and make the best use of time.
* Ensure events are delivered in a compliant manner including following the relevant rules of safeguarding, health and safety, Gift Aid and more. Ensure relevant rules around data protection are followed in the planning and delivery of engagement activities.

About you:

* Educated to degree level or equivalent, with additional qualifications in first aid and safeguarding being advantageous.
* Strong experience in project planning and delivering both online and in-person events, particularly within a membership or not-for-profit setting.
* Skilled in managing third-party suppliers, developing and overseeing SLAs, designing risk assessments, and budget management.
* Familiarity with Raiser's Edge, Gift Aid legislation, financial reporting, and loyalty card technology is essential, along with experience in market research.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure and meet financial targets and deadlines.
* Proactive and motivated, with a willingness to work flexibly and a strong interest in the museums or heritage sector.
