Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. A critical part of the work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative you’ll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our operative community comes from a variety of backgrounds. We focus on transferable skills and behaviours and provide necessary training to work safely and competently on the network.
Role Purpose and Responsibilities
* Track: Maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient.
* Work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often transporting kit across varied terrain.
* Operate with safety and respect for rules; work next to moving trains traveling at high speed.
* You matter to your team: be the first to arrive and last to leave, check and prepare van and equipment, and drive the team between sites. Provide lookout duties to keep the whole team safe.
* You matter to us: committed to self-development; receive training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Structured training supports moving into rail careers.
* Your Skills Matter: demonstrate transferable skills if you have no rail experience; meet required standards and keep up to date with procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
* Team-working: ability to work closely with the maintenance team to deliver safe, efficient work.
* Communication: strong communication skills for safe operations.
* Proactive planning: punctuality, readiness of van and equipment, anticipating team needs.
* Working under pressure: stay calm outdoors with trains passing nearby.
* Following rules and instructions: understand and respect rules; raise safety concerns when needed.
* Willingness to learn: commitment to developing skills and keeping up with new standards.
Additional Information
* Shifts: changing pattern including days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working: comfortable in all weather conditions.
* Pre-employment checks: drug and alcohol testing, medical assessment, BPSS checks, hearing and eyesight examinations.
* Driving: driving licence (category B) required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: within 60 minutes of the work location.
