Do you have a passion for the countryside and a proven ability to lead, inspire, and manage with confidence — especially in financial planning and delivery?
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced General Manager to lead and develop our much-loved independent charity. Based in a truly unique outdoor setting in the heart of the Broads National Park, the Trust provides a vital connection to nature, heritage and wellbeing for thousands of visitors each year.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong background in tourism, charity leadership or visitor attractions, who also brings robust financial skills and strategic vision. You will be responsible for the Trust's day-to-day operations and long-term direction, working closely with a small, passionate team and reporting directly to the Board of Trustees.
Salary: Up to £48,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Hours: Full-time (42.5 hours per week over 5 days, including some weekend working)
Key Responsibilities
* Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Trust to ensure long-term sustainability and day-to-day excellence.
* Oversee financial planning and performance, including budgeting, forecasting and income generation — working closely with the Office Manager to ensure robust financial control.
* Lead, support and inspire a small, dedicated team, fostering a positive and welcoming working environment.
* Drive visitor numbers and engagement by developing an annual programme of events and activities in collaboration with the Events & Engagement Officer.
* • Work closely with Tearoom staff, the Catering and Gift Shop Manager to ensure alignment on visitor experience, commercial opportunities and operational planning.
* Work with the Marketing and Fundraising team to grow brand visibility and identify development opportunities.
* Collaborate with the gardening and grounds team to create 1, 2, and 5-year plans for site management and improvement.
* Maintain effective relationships with local authorities, tourism bodies and environmental agencies (e.g. DEFRA, Broads Authority, Environment Agency).
* Ensure compliance with all health & safety, environmental and statutory requirements.
* Deliver excellent visitor experience and ensure the Trust remains a happy, welcoming and safe place for all.
Person Specification
* Proven experience in a leadership or senior management role within the charity, tourism, heritage, or conservation sectors.
* Strong financial acumen — experience preparing and managing budgets, understanding charity finance or small business operations and delivering income-generating initiatives.
* A passion for the outdoors and a genuine desire to share it with others.
* Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate both staff and volunteers.
* A creative problem solver, able to 'think around corners' and find opportunities in challenges.
* Knowledge of woodland conservation or land-based visitor attractions is an advantage, though not essential.
This is a rare opportunity to take the helm of a treasured local charity and help shape its future. If you're a strategic thinker with people and financial skills and a genuine passion for nature, we'd love to hear from you.
