An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Children's Community Nursing Service (CCNS) for a dynamic Practice Development Nurse (PDN) to support our CCNS team. The successful applicant will demonstrate a level of enthusiasm and commitment that will support the development of our amazing team and develop their professional goals.

The post holder will be integral to the ongoing delivery of children's community care education at all levels of entry. They will be able to be innovative and work collaboratively to ensure that the education remains at the forefront of

The role requires significant Paediatric Community experience .

Interview will be held on January 15th.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide professional leadership within education, and provide direction and inspirational leadership to all members of the team.

As a member of the education team it is desirable that you have excellent clinical skills, recent community experience and a sound knowledge of community nursing care.

The post holder will be an expert children's community nurse with extensive clinical experience in the area and able to care for children requiring all types of community nursing care.

The post holder will be involved in the development of education delivery and be able to meet the changing demands of the nursing workforce into the future.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To identify training and development needs of staff within the area in accordance with local and national policies.
2. Create a climate of research awareness to encourage evidence-based practice. To initiate research projects and encourage nurses to undertake their own small research projects and support their progress.
3. Support staff in the provision of regular local and relevant teaching and training sessions including provision of ‘buddied’ clinical time to facilitate on the job learning.
4. To be a source of highly specialist clinical and educational knowledge and to provide clinical supervision.
5. To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
6. To ensure that patients’ receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines.
7. Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individuals.
8. Assist in the provision of training programmes for nurses to expand their clinical skills intravenous drugs, cannulation, phlebotomy, which are acceptable to and certifiable by the Trust.
9. Support the review and development of the annual Educational, training, development and business plans. Acting as representative in the course management and curricula development forums and liaise with Higher Education Institutes in order to present future needs and requirements and be familiar with the educational needs of all staff.
10. Responsible for the development and co-ordination of training programmes for staff in conjunction with Training and Development department. The post holder will also be required to deliver training as required
11. Develop and ensure training programmes are established to train staff to meet statutory training requirements (fire, resuscitation, health & safety, infection control, manual handling)
12. Tailor a programme of orientation for new staff members and arrange an ongoing programme of training for qualified and unqualified staff and overseas nurses requiring adaptation in the care and management of patients within the speciality.
13. Work in conjunction with Team Leaders and Lead Nurses to ensure that staff members are trained as preceptors and assessors to support pre and post- registration students and new staff members.
14. Provide support to staff completing clinical and legal nursing documents to ensure they are completed accurately and legibly and that their relevance is understood and confidentiality maintained in accordance with Trust policy and NMC guidelines.
15. Works with Team Leaders to contribute to standard setting for nursing practice
16. Participates in the training of staff to monitor the quality of care delivered using clinical standards and takes necessary action to ensure excellence in nursing practice. Bases standards upon relevant research where possible.
17. Participates in Individual Performance Review of staff when appropriate using the Scope of Professional Practice.
18. Assists in the accurate collection of data relating to staff training data, staff absence and any other data that may be reasonably requested for audit purposes. Protects patient confidentiality and acts according to the Data Protection Act.
19. Develop and implement training programmes for nurses to expand their clinical skills in accordance with the Trust’s standards
20. To be accountable for care given and comply with the NMC Code of Conduct, working within the framework of the UKCC’s scope of professional practice.
21. To ensure compliance and implementation of Trust policies and procedures, relevant legislation, Nursing and Midwifery strategy and Clinical Governance standards are understood and practised by staff. Acts according to the Health & Safety Act and manual handling practice ensuring that all training of staff is documented.
22. Practises in accordance with the professional direction as stipulated in the Trust’s Nursing & Midwifery strategy.
23. To take personal responsibility for promoting a safe environment and safe patient care by identifying areas of risk and following the Incident, Serious Incident and Near Misses reporting procedure.
24. Have a visible presence within the clinical setting.
25. Is responsible for own professional development and an awareness of clinical educational developments. Agrees own personal, professional and service objectives according to Individual Performance Review with Manager.
26. Actively disseminate research findings as a positive role model through lectures, teaching and other appropriate communication methods
27. Assist in the bench marking of nursing practice and evaluate the impact on new practices implemented.
28. To work closely with other lead nurses, link tutors and ward sisters to ensure that placements are well supported and understand how to deal with poor student/staff performance.
29. Communicates with staff in all areas of the Trust
30. Submit relevant articles to recognised journals or presentations at relevant conferences and encourages and assists others in doing so.
31. Act all times to ensure that staff, practise Trust and Unit policies and procedures.
32. Responsible for monitoring performance against competency requirements
33. Participates in the selection, interviewing and recruitment of staff and in staff retention by promoting professional and personal growth of Staff.
34. Awareness of business planning procedure within the Trust.
35. Facilitate the sharing of best practice both within the Trust and externally.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

36. RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child Registered Nurse on The NMC register.. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
37. Specialised professional knowledge of mentorship, education and development practice to Masters level or equivalent
38. Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.

Experience

Essential criteria

39. Significant post registration experience within the speciality
40. Experience of designing, delivering and evaluating training sessions / programmes
41. Experience of mentoring/ supervising/ assessing students in practice
42. Experience of managing a team or caseload
43. Experience of involvement in educational initiatives

Skills

Essential criteria

44. Knowledge of local, regional and national policies pertaining to practice experience and education
45. Understanding of the principles of teaching and learning and their application within the practice setting
46. Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal & communication skills
