The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a widely experienced Pathology Operations Manager to ensure effective and efficient operational, and strategic delivery of our world-class pathology services. This is an opportunity to contribute to the delivery of cutting-edge cancer diagnostics and research in an internationally renowned institution.

Main duties of the job

The Pathology Operations Manager plays a key role in overseeing operations, ensuring financial efficiency, and driving service improvement:

• Operational management – Ensure the timely and efficient provision of high-performance pathology services
• Strategic management – Leading on strategy delivery for pathology services, promoting innovation, quality, opportunities for commercial development and operational excellence
• Stakeholder engagement – Collaborating with clinicians, internal and external partners
• Workforce – Ensuring key performance indicators, service level agreements, and financial targets are met. Delivering a recruitment and retention strategy

• Proven experience in pathology operational management within the NHS or healthcare sector.
• Strong leadership skills with a track record of delivering services that meet regulatory compliance and clinical requirements
• Ability to manage change, negotiate at a senior level, and lead projects that improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex business cases and stakeholder engagement

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

2. Professional clinical knowledge acquired through degree, supplemented by specialist training to masters or equivalent level, management qualification or equivalent experience.

Experience/Knowledge

3. Highly developed specialist knowledge in laboratory management, underpinned by theory and experience
4. Experience and knowledgeable in policy implementation & service development.

5. Communication skills - Requires experience in negotiating, being persuasive and motivational.
6. Ability to deliver formal presentations as required.
7. Experience in dealing with complex facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation comparison of a range of options.
8. Skills for analysing service and staffing issues and working with others on driving solutions.
9. Demonstrates strong planning and organisational skills across a broad range of issues and options. Ability to adapt approach/plan to meet the service requirements.
10. Responsible for operational planning.
11. Budget holder for department/service
12. Manages staff of department, addresses issues including recruitment and retention.
13. Ability to work autonomously to manage the department.
14. Highly skilled at interpretating organisational and national/specialised policies.

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff

At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.

The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
