Overview
Purpose of the role: To identify and capitalise on business opportunities, expand the customer base, manage relationships, and drive revenue growth.
Responsibilities
* Execution of market research and analysis to identify potential new opportunities, market trends, and customer needs; develop strategies for business growth.
* Identify leads through channels such as networking, referrals, cold calling, and attendance at industry events.
* Develop and execute strategies to acquire new business and expand the customer base, including preparation of proposals, presentations, and negotiation of contracts.
* Collaborate with relationship teams, product managers, credit analysts, operations, and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery of banking products and services to clients.
* Forecast sales targets and track progress against goals, including regular reports on business development activities, pipeline status, and sales performance to management.
* Contribute to the development of business development strategies and initiatives to drive revenue growth and achieve business objectives.
Leadership expectations (Director)
* Manage a business function with input to wide strategic initiatives; lead and develop a large team or act as a senior technical expert where applicable.
* Provide advisory input to senior management and committees to influence decisions outside of own function; manage resourcing, budgeting, and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
* Escalate policy breaches appropriately and foster compliance; ensure relevant regulations are observed.
* Demonstrate leadership behaviours; align with Barclays values and expectations for leadership and the Barclays Mindset.
* Act as a principal contact point for key clients and counterparts; serve as a spokesperson for the function and business division.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a high-calibre Business Development Director to lead origination of new Large Corporate relationships across Scotland. This senior, externally focused role identifies, engages, and converts high-value corporate opportunities. You will expand Barclays’ footprint in the Large Corporate segment, working with senior stakeholders across Corporate Banking, Product teams, and other functions. You will open doors, build relationships at C-suite level, and position Barclays as the banking partner of choice for Scotland’s largest and most complex businesses.
Key Responsibilities
* Driving New Business Origination: Identify and originate new-to-bank Large Corporate relationships across Scotland; build and manage a prioritized pipeline of high-value prospects; develop tailored engagement strategies for complex, multi-stakeholder organizations; lead early-stage client engagement and convert opportunities into active mandates.
* Building Strategic Relationships: Establish and maintain relationships with CFOs, Treasurers, senior executives, private equity sponsors, institutional investors, and professional advisers; build a strong external profile through industry events and forums.
* Delivering Client-Centric Solutions: Originate opportunities across Barclays’ full product suite (corporate and structured lending, transaction banking and liquidity solutions, FX and risk management, investment banking, debt capital markets, and strategic advisory); collaborate with product specialists to deliver integrated solutions.
* Pipeline Management & Execution: Maintain a disciplined, data-driven approach to pipeline management; lead opportunities through the full origination lifecycle and ensure onboarding and long-term relationship management.
* Market Insight & Competitive Positioning: Understand sector trends, capital flows, M&A activity, and competitor strategies to identify white-space opportunities and refine go-to-market approach.
* Risk & Governance: Ensure all business originated aligns with risk appetite and regulatory requirements; maintain high standards of conduct, governance, and integrity.
* Leadership & Collaboration: Work with teams across the organization to ensure compliant and effective delivery and growth of the Large Corporate business in Scotland.

* Experience: Significant Corporate Banking experience within the Large Corporate segment; proven track record of originating and winning complex, high-value client relationships; strong understanding of corporate finance and multi-product banking solutions.
* Business Development: Ability to build and convert a high-quality opportunity pipeline; strong network across Scotland’s corporate and advisory landscape; proactive, market-led origination approach.
* Relationship & Influence: Credibility to engage at CFO/C-suite level; excellent stakeholder management; ability to collaborate across a large, matrixed organization.
