We are looking for an exceptional Director of Estates and Facilities to lead the development of a modern, sustainable, and strategically aligned estates function at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
This newly created role offers the opportunity to shape the future of a large and diverse NHS estate spanning Basingstoke, Winchester, and Andover, serving a population of around 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of west Berkshire.
As Director of Estates and Facilities, you will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Trust’s estate and facilities portfolio, driving estate transformation, improving compliance and resilience, and developing a long-term Estates Strategy that supports both immediate operational priorities and future clinical ambitions. This role presents a rare opportunity to modernise infrastructure, strengthen sustainability initiatives, and create environments that better support patients, staff, and future models of care.
Main duties of the job
Following the government review of the New Hospital Programme, HHFT is placing renewed focus on its existing estate, recognising the importance of strong estates leadership in supporting safe, high-quality, and sustainable care across the Trust.
We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking estates leader with a strong track record of leading complex estates portfolios, ideally within the NHS or wider public sector. You will combine strategic thinking, operational credibility, and collaborative leadership, with a clear commitment to creating safe, sustainable, and patient-centred environments.

Training and Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in estates management, engineering, facilities management or a related discipline.
2. Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RICS, IHEEM, CIBSE, CIOB, RIBA, IWFM).
3. Specialist technical training across multiple estates and engineering domains (e.g., HTMs, HBNs, safety systems, project management).
Desirable criteria
4. MBA or recognised leadership qualification.
5. LEAN or similar improvement methodology certification.
Experience
Essential criteria
6. Significant senior leadership experience in estates and facilities within a large, complex organisation
7. Leading major capital projects and estate redevelopment schemes.
8. Managing outsourced services and complex commercial contracts.
9. Extensive experience of statutory compliance across estates and engineering systems.
10. Leading multidisciplinary and multi trade teams, including change management and workforce transformation.
11. Experience in risk management, incident response, business continuity and emergency planning.
12. Experience preparing business cases, reports and presenting at Board or Committee level.
13. Strong understanding of NHS estates policy, governance frameworks, compliance standards and system collaborations.
14. Deep knowledge of commercial, financial, procurement and contract law requirements relevant to estates and facilities.
15. Advanced knowledge of CAFM, BMS, BIM, CAD, asset management systems and digital estates tools.
16. Sustainability, carbon reduction, environmental legislation and Green Plan requirements.
Desirable criteria
17. Knowledge of RAAC management and mitigation requirements.
18. Detailed knowledge of property law, land management and contract law.
