Overview
Senior Commercial Manager – Buildings and Places. You will undertake the role of Commercial Lead for a Sector or Sub-Sector within our Buildings and Places business. You will drive commercial performance, strategic commercial planning, and contractual excellence across a diverse portfolio of projects. The commercial function links the operational requirements of the business with key corporate functions such as finance, legal and risk. This role combines strategic commercial oversight with hands-on management and offers the opportunity to influence business outcomes across sectors such as infrastructure, defence, commercial and social infrastructure. This role offers hybrid working from UK&I offices with relatively frequent travel to client sites and AECOM regional offices as needed.
Responsibilities
* Leadership & Planning: Develop and implement commercial strategies in bids aligned with Sector/Sub-Sector goals and growth plans; advise Sector leadership on market risks, opportunities, pricing and commercial trends; support the Head of Commercial to drive innovation; work with the Buildings and Places commercial team to apply a consistent approach across Sectors and report to the Head of Commercial.
* Contract & Risk Management: Oversee negotiation and implementation of prime and subcontracts, NDAs, MOUs, teaming agreements, and JV arrangements with the legal team; manage changes with a focus on commercial implications; embed robust risk management procedures across bid and delivery phases; resolve contractual disputes and claims; lead governance with corporate functions such as legal, tax, ORM, treasury.
* Commercial Oversight: Oversee and support financial project budgeting; provide project performance reporting across the portfolio; identify and assess change with project leads; monitor KPIs and cash flow; deliver monthly and quarterly reports to Sector stakeholders.
* Team Leadership & Development: Report to the Head of Commercial, support growth of the commercial team, coach and mentor staff on best practices and contract management; promote diversity, succession planning and professional development.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strategic commercial relationships with clients, sub-consultants and internal stakeholders; represent the business in commercial negotiations and industry forums; attend client meetings as required; influence bid/delivery strategy and support work-winning activities.
Qualifications
* Degree or equivalent in Business, Engineering, Law or related discipline
* Significant experience in commercial management across infrastructure, defence, social infrastructure or commercial sectors
* Proven leadership experience or a key role with commercial and operational responsibilities
* Strong understanding of procurement routes, contracting models, and professional services frameworks
* Strong understanding of benchmarking, pricing and delivery models across relevant sectors
* Experience in negotiation and dispute resolution
* Effective communicator with strong interpersonal abilities and persuasive listening
* Skilled in producing fee proposals, financial analysis, commercial reporting, and risk mitigation
