Volunteer Board Trustee Recruitment

This is an unpaid, in‑person volunteer role requiring the commitment of approximately six evening meetings per year, each about two hours long. A trustee may also be asked to attend up to two additional meetings on a case‑by‑case basis. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2026, 5pm.


About Burton and District Mind

We are your local mental health charity, affiliated with Mind – the leading mental health charity in England & Wales. We serve East Staffordshire, Lichfield District and Tamworth Borough, supporting people with lived experience of mental health problems since 1991. Our aim is that everyone experiencing a mental health problem receives both support and respect.

We are looking for a Board Trustee

* Passionate about improving mental health services in the area
* A strategic and creative thinker
* A team player who can collaborate as part of the Trustee Board
* Available for up to six pre‑planned evening meetings per year, and potentially two additional meetings per year as required

Person Specification for Trustees

We do not require applicants to meet every item on the following list; each person brings their own unique mix of skills, experience and life experience. Training can be offered in some areas.


Essential

* A commitment to Burton and District Mind’s values and ethos
* Willingness to attend regular Board meetings and, where appropriate, additional meetings
* Willingness to contribute to discussions in board meetings and listen to other points of view respectfully
* A knowledge or interest in mental health services, either personally, as a carer or supporter of someone with lived experience of mental health issues
* An understanding of how race, racism, culture, gender, sexuality, age, religious belief and disability affect outcomes in relation to mental health services
* Basic IT skills and good communication skills
* Willingness to take on the responsibilities of trusteeship
* An understanding of statutory and charity regulations or a willingness to become familiar with them
* To contribute to making informed decisions as part of the board
* To consider all reports, recommendations and proposals and ensure they are for the betterment of the organisation and its beneficiaries
* Willingness to adhere to B&D Mind’s policies and procedures
* Willingness and ability to attend training as required for board development
* Have clear, independent judgment
* A respectful understanding of Data‑Protection Legislation and confidentiality
* Ability to think strategically


Desirable

* Experience of trusteeship
* Knowledge of charity governance
* Contribute to the Strategy of the organisation
* Being a proactive member of the Board
* Willingness to act as an organisational ambassador
* Willingness to attend fundraising and tender events if required
* Experience of mental health issues either personally or as a carer
* Lived experience of mental health, personal, or through supporting another
* Specialist skills such as:
* • Mental Health / Health / Social Care management
* • Leadership and Organisational Development
* • Risk Management
* • IT
* • Accounting/bookkeeping
* • Commercial knowledge in procurement or contracting
* • Legal skills
* • Fundraising
* • HR and employment legislation experience
* • Marketing and communications


General Roles and Responsibilities of all Trustees

As part of the Board, trustees have overall strategic responsibility for the organisation’s business plan, management and long‑term plans. They act in the organisation’s best interests, ensuring it adheres to charity and statutory regulations and best practice, and its own governing documents. Trustees promote openness, transparency and accountability, working closely with other Board members and the Chief Officer to meet B&D Mind’s aims and objectives. They attend regular Board meetings, participate actively in decision‑making and voting, consider all recommendations and proposals, promote a positive image of mental health, and may represent B&D Mind at external meetings when required.


Time Commitment

The board meets six evenings per year for approximately two hours each. Trustees also need to review relevant papers prior to each meeting and may be asked to devote additional time during periods of increased service activity.
